JIRAYA ABILITIES A late bloomer, Jiraiya developed from being untalented as a child to one of the Legendary Sannin by adulthood, even offered twice to be Hokage. He was noted as the only shinobi who could oppose Orochimaru during the Konoha Crush, and indeed, he fought evenly with the latter while both were handicapped. Even Itachi Uchiha and Kisame Hoshigaki, both S-rank shinobi, feared their best efforts against Jiraiya in battle would end in a stalemate, even with reinforcements. He also survived a rampage from Naruto's "Version 2" state, resealing the Nine-Tails' chakra afterwards. Jiraiya's overall prowess was praised highly by other highly skilled ninja, some of whom trained under his tutelage and became village leaders in later life. CHAKRA AND PHYSICAL PROWESS Jiraiya had high amounts of strong chakra. Even when drugged, he could still create a swamp that sank and immobilised one of Orochimaru's massive snakes (two in the anime). Jiraiya also had considerable chakra control, able to form the Rasengan with one hand, or two at once as well as displaying each of the technique's stages. He could even use the Finger Carving Seal despite being stabbed multiple times by the Six Paths of Pain's Chakra Disruption Blades. While not his specialty, Jiraiya was proficient in taijutsu, being able to match Orochimaru while both were handicapped. He could also stop some of the individual dogs that split from the Giant Multi-Headed Dog with some kicks. Jiraiya's physical strength, while nowhere near Tsunade's, was such that he could push Naruto over a cliff several metres away with only one finger. In the anime, he was shown strong enough to lift a massive boulder and throw a large snake a great distance as a child. Jiraiya was also durable enough to withstand a direct kick to the face from Might Guy, and getting ploughed through several steel pipes by Nagato's Giant Ox without much damage. NINJUTSU Jiraiya could grow and sharpen his hair for offensive or defensive uses, and learned the Rasengan from Minato. A specialist in infiltration and espionage, Jiraiya developed techniques such as the Transparent Escape Technique to aid him in such missions (although he mainly uses it to help him spy on women). He could also use barrier ninjutsu, using one that could detect all movements within a wide radius, or a toad-themed variant that could trap enemies. Although Jiraiya knew how to recognise and counter genjutsu, he was not skilled at using it. NATURE TRANSFORMATION Jiraiya could utilise multiple elements including Fire, Earth, Water, and Wind Release, as well as Yin and Yang Release. Even on low chakra, he could use Earth Release to create deep swamps that can immobilise opponents as large as Orochimaru's gigantic snakes or as strong as the Human Path. His proficiency in Fire Release is great enough to unleash oil-enhanced blasts of flame. With the help of Gamabunta, he could produce a large torrent of fire that filled an entire valley. In Sage Mode, he could create a lake of burning oil with the help of Fukasaku and Shima. His vast knowledge of ninjutsu allowed him to teach Nagato all five chakra natures (albeit it was a feat made possible by Nagato's Rinnegan). TOAD TECHNIQUES Known as the "Toad Sage", Jiraiya possessed several toad-related techniques, many of which dealt with summoning toads. His high skill allowed him to summon Gamabunta, or the nearly indestructible sophagus of a great, fire-breathing toad that could be remotely controlled. Like other toads, Jiraiya even gained the ability to spit oil from his mouth. For spying and infiltration, Jiraiya had the Toad Flatness Shadow Manipulation Technique, which allowed him to hide himself as a shadow, and even attach to another ninjas shadow to control them. He could also hide in the belly of a small toad, which could enter most areas undetected. FŪINJUTSU Jiraiya was well-versed in fūinjutsu, as he quickly deduced the workings of the seal placed on Narutos stomach upon meeting him. He also recognised and removed the Five Elements Seal that Orochimaru had placed on Narutos stomach. In addition, Jiraiya could utilise the Fire Sealing Method to contain even Itachis Amaterasu within a scroll for future study. He later created a method of suppressing the Nine-Tails influence over Naruto, which activates by simply coming into contact with Narutos body. SENJUTSU With his high chakra reserves, Jiraiya learned the Mount Myōboku teachings of senjutsu, ultimately becoming able to enter Sage Mode. Due to his incomplete mastery of the form, Jiraiya became more toad-like in appearance, with longer marks along the sides of his face, a goatee, a larger nose with warts, webbed hands and feet and sharp teeth. He disliked this form since it made him unappealing to girls. With his enhanced strength and speed, Jiraiya could blind the Human Path with a single kick, as well as leap down from a high vantage point to form an attack, before his sandals which had fallen before he jumped had even reached the ground. He could use stronger versions of his techniques, and also mastered the Frog Kata fighting style. As one must remain absolutely still to gather natural energy, Jiraiya would summon Shima and Fukasaku and have them fuse to his body to absorb the energy for him. In addition to maintaining Jiraiyas natural energy while he fought, they added their own abilities to aid him, using powerful techniques such as the Sage Art: Goemon and helping him perform genjutsu. Jiraiya often used his appearance to his advantage, changing his legs to frog legs to increase his jumping power, or enlarging his fist for greater striking power. INTELLIGENCE While he would normally come off as goofy, Jiraiya had repeatedly shown himself to be a shrewd man. His intelligence enabled him to track Orochimaru and Akatsuki through the years, and he headed his own spy network all over the Five Great Shinobi Countries for this purpose. He was very knowledgeable in various techniques, able to quickly recognise them and know how to counter them. He was also a capable teacher, as even Itachi acknowledged Narutos growth under Jiraiyas tutelage for two-and-a-half years. Jiraiya was also very skilled in information gathering, as he would constantly relay any important intelligence he acquired to his allies. He also possessed tremendous memory, as he managed to relay a coded message regarding to Pains identity by the usage of the Icha Icha Tactics book pages, remembering the first word on those pages
ROSHI TECHNIQUES AND SPECIAL ABILITIES Flight Though Roshi cannot fly in the original manga and anime series, he is capable of flight in the first Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi and Dragon Ball Heroes. Hikou In Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2, Master Roshi is capable of flight by twirling his staff at high speeds like a helicopter, or by running at high speeds while in the air. Ki Blast The most basic form of energy wave. Kamehameha An energy blast of which Master Roshi created. He presumably taught it to Grandpa Gohan and then several of the Z Fighters of Earth, including Krillin and Yamcha. Goku figured out how to perform the technique after witnessing Master Roshi use it. This then became Gokus signature attack. Tien gained the ability to perform the Kamehameha, and double its power when he observed it from Yamcha. Majin Buu also learns the attack after seeing Goku use it. The attack is performed by cupping the hands at the side of the body, usually the right, drawing them back and saying KA-ME-HA-ME-HA in five stages, before thrusting the hands forward and shooting a powerful blue energy beam towards the target. In Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F, Roshi demonstrates the ability to fire the Kamehameha with one hand, after he was interrupted by a kick to the head before he finished his normal incantation. The Original Kamehameha The original version of the Kamehameha, it involves many arm sweeping movements before cupping the hands together. MAX Power Kamehameha This is simply a Kamehameha performed after ki is gathered into all parts of the body, causing a far more muscular build than normal. This causes a much more powerful blast than normally possible. Capable of destroying a planetary body about the size of Earths moon. Master-Student Kamehameha A triple Kamehameha performed by Goku, Krillin, and Master Roshi. They used it in the movie Dragon Ball Z: The Worlds Strongest. While facing Dr. Wheelo, Master Roshi yelled Kamehameha!, making his students follow him, but it did not work. Afterimage Technique Roshi moves so quickly that he leaves an image of himself behind. Most often, it is used to dodge an incoming attack and get behind the opponent to perform a counter-attack. Roshi uses this technique during the World Martial Arts Tournament. He also uses it in the Butōden video game series, and he uses the Afterimage Strike variation in the Budokai Tenkaichi series. Kiai Also called Sawayaka Na Kaze, it is an invisible wave of ki that Roshi emits by waving his hand. As Jackie Chun, he uses the technique to defeat Yamcha in the 21st World Tournament. He also uses the technique in Dragon Ball: Origins. Hypnosis Technique A technique that was used by Master Roshi at the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament against Man-Wolf. It can be used to hypnotize and control the mind of the opponent. Sleepy Boy Technique Used by Master Roshi at the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament (as Jackie Chun). Basically this is a hypnosis move used to put the opponent to sleep, by using hand motions and weird voice sounds. Telepathy The ability to channel ones thoughts to another being. Master Roshi uses this at the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament to read the mind of Nam who was in desperate need of water for his drought-ridden village. He later uses this to converse between himself and the Master Shen during the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament, even if the conversation was merely exchanging insults. Thunder Shock Surprise The most potent and powerful attack used by Master Roshi (disguised as Jackie Chun) in which he shoots a lightning blast towards the target using both hands, and traps the opponent within an electric field. The attack is extremely lethal and dangerous, and as such, Roshi prefers not to use it. Before Goku, Master Roshi had only needed to use the attack once before while sparring with Grandpa Gohan. Evil Containment Wave Invented by Mutaito as a way to capture King Piccolo. The problem with this technique is that it sacrifices the users life. First, you hold one hand in the air, palm up, and stick two fingers out. Basically, you concentrate on the user and pick them up, forcing their spirit to a destination. In all the cases, the user was forced into a container with a holy talisman charm reading demon seal or magic seal. The aim has to be perfect in order to get the user inside the jar, and it takes a great deal of discipline. Meteo Telekinesis Master Roshis meteor attack in Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Battle 22. He yells Mafuba and uses his telekinesis to control and attack his opponent. Also used by Supreme Kai. Ki Sense The ability to sense others power levels. Roshi is shown to possess this ability at various points in the series. 3D Scan Mode A mode that allows for advanced scanning of enemies. Roshi uses this in the movie Dragon Ball Z: Bojack Unbound when he finds some ladies sitting at a table. Special Beam Cannon Master Roshi was shown to use this technique in the Dragon Ball Z OVA/Video Game Dragon Ball Z: Atsumare! Gokū Wārudo. He is not shown to use the technique in any other part of the Dragon Ball media. High Speed Rush Master Roshis Blast 2 rush attack in the Budokai Tenkaichi series. Turtle School Ultimate Fist Master Roshis Blast 2 rush attack in his Max Power form in the Budokai Tenkaichi series. False Courage One of Master Roshis Blast 1 in the Budokai Tenkaichi series. Pump Up One of Master Roshis Blast 1 in his Max Power form in the Budokai Tenkaichi series. FIGHTING TECHNIQUES Jan Ken This is Gokus signature attack in early Dragon Ball, but is soon replaced by the Kamehameha. The user shouts Jan-ken, then a name corresponding to the attack. Jan-ken-gu, equals rock and will be a strong punch. Jan-ken-choki, equals scissors and will be a poke in the eyes. Jan-ken-pa, equals paper and will be an open palm strike. The same technique was taught to Gokus grandfather by Master Roshi. It is unknown whether he is the inventor of the technique although it is assumed so. Drunken Fist Master Roshi used this technique as Jackie Chun in the World Martial Arts Tournament. He acts drunk wobbling around, and while the opponent is confused, he hits him catching him off guard. Quite possibly a reference to the Jackie Chan movie, Drunken Master. Drunken Turtle Punch A cane smack performed while acting drunk. Used in the Butōden series. Drunken Turtle Kick A kick performed while acting drunk. Used in the Butōden series. Elephant Punch A punch performed with the back of an opened hand. Used in the Butōden series. Pressure Point Attack A technique which, by touching certain pressure points on an opponents body, can incite effects such as paralysis. This bound technique was used by Master Roshi when he pitted against Man-Wolf during the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament. Despite its usage in the manga, it was only named in the anime. Two-Level Knee Hit A jumping knee strike followed by a kick. Used in the Butōden series.
