When we're kids, we're always told not to play with our food. However, to LA-based artist Mar Cuervo, rules like this were certainly made to be broken. In fact, she's become quite a fan of crushing it with her hands.
So much so, that she's built an entire website around the different times she's thrown a satisfying punch into a fluffy cake, smashed some Jell-O through her fingers, or simply crushed the thick shell of a chocolate Easter Bunny.
But, you know, why?!
The project is called 'Destroyer', and through smashing and destroying different soft, delicate, or pastel-colored desserts, Mar feels that she is freely allowing the 'unladylike' emotion of anger to combat the implicitly gendered connotation of dessert.
"I put on some good old Pantera or Rage Against the Machine, go to my closest 99 Cent Store, choose the cutest little piece of edible object, go home, and destroy it."
Basically, the restrictive female aesthetic's got her pissed. That's why she slaughters entire packages of Peeps for art.
Now, before you think she needs to take a chill pill, her 'Destroyer' website is quick to defend her anger, suggesting that it's an emotion worth tackling every now and then - even when let out on a helpless plate of Twinkies:
"Anger is usually silenced and avoided as an ostracized and negative feeling, but it is probably the strongest feeling we have and the one that make us change things."
So what do you guys think? Is Mar simply wasting food, or is her message something we should all be taking more considerably? Have you ever wanted to smash food with your hands too?
