Loosely-related story time: one place where I used to volunteer got a lot of interns from other countries (mostly countries in Africa but sometimes Europe or South America). One particular intern arrived from a South American country and proceeded to greet all the male employees with kisses. That went on for an entire day before anyone was brave enough to tell him that it wasn't a normal or polite way to greet other men in the US. Needless to say, many of the male employees were mortified and the rest of us found it hilarious that they were too chicken to say anything to him. Cultural norms set people up for some really awkward moments when traveling!
