Sam Smith may have won the Oscar for Best Original Song but he did not win the approval of previous Oscar winner, Dustin Lance Black. Black is mostly known in Hollywood for his work as a screen writer and being the fiancé of Olympian heart-throb Tom Daley. Black is a big advocate for the LGBT community so when Sam Smith suggested in his speech that he was the first openly gay man to win the Oscar, Black made sure to correct him. Not only was Smith's win an upset after everyone assumed the award would go to Lady Gaga, but his ignorance showed the ultimate flaw in being chosen as the winner.
Black pointed out that he is an openly gay man who won and Oscar pointing at the fact that Smith probably doesn't know who he is. And he made it very clear that Smith needs to stop all contact with Black's fiancé, Tom Daley. Ultimately it's an insanely awkward confrontation that could have easily been directed outside of the social media sphere but everyone loves a good reaction. It was definitely a Twitter moment.
And now, the entire internet, especially the LGBT community, hates Smith for his comments. They were ignorant and very self-deserving, something that is completely inappropriate for the most prestigious award show in the US.
"I read an article a few months ago by Sir Ian McKellen and he said no openly gay man had ever won an Oscar, If this is the case - even if it isn’t the case, I want to dedicate this to the LGBT community, all around the world. I stand here, tonight as a proud gay man and I hope we can all stand together as equals some day."
His speech was aired to around 32 million people.
