Letter To A Young Programmer Considering A Startup
This one made it to the top of Hacker News today. As I kinda feel like this is where my life is headed, this somewhat hits home with me. There are a lot of conflicting posts for and against working for the startup-complex we know to be inhabiting San Francisco these days (and increasingly, other places around the world), such as this one: http://michaelochurch.wordpress.com/2012/07/08/dont-waste-your-time-in-crappy-startup-jobs/ I think what I would say to people is this: Before you decide to both make your own or work for a startup, seriously analyze your goals and plan and make sure what you're going to do aligns with what you WANT to do, ultimately. For me, whether it's a startup or an established company, I just want to do what I love to do -- make cool stuff and learn new languages to add to my toolbelt for making more cool stuff. For me, I think startups give me a sense of accomplishment I don't think I could find at larger companies, and a sense of belonging, among other things. Don't do it because it's cool. Do it because it benefits you, IF it benefits you. If it doesn't, don't.
