It's a story for the history books! Canada's first pandas (that have been born on Canadian soil) now have names!
It's time to meet Jia Panpan and Jia Yueyue.
The meaning behind the names.
The adorable panda twins were born at the Toronto Zoo on October 13, 2015. They became famous from the moment they took their first breath. The older male cub was named Jia Panpan, which means "Canadian hope" and the female panda was named Jia Yueyue, which means "Canadian joy." The names honor the Chinese ancestry of the pandas, while also honoring the fact that they were born in the Canada.
Even Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau partook in the naming festivities. Look how happy the Prime Minister is getting a hug from two of the most famous pandas in the world!
The Toronto Zoo held a naming contest, open to the public. A naming committee and the Toronto Zoo came up with seven name combinations for the public to vote on. The pandas will be debuted to the public on March 12.
