You may recognize Elizabeth Acevedo from her other popular piece in spoken word "Hair" where she talks about the term "pelo malo" in Latin America. Acevedo is a New York-based spoken word poet and writer.
In this piece, she performs "Afro-Latina." She touches on the topic of being black in Latin America, and how her identity was molded from her family, her friends, her experiences, and the discomfort from being othered.
I wanted to share this video in honor of International Women's Day.
