Let not your left hand know what your right hand does. The Master said His disciples ought not to wish to be seen of men when they do good things. They are to think only of pleasing The Father. If they seek human notice and praise, they will receive no other reward. But if they work only for the eye of God, they will have a heavenly reward. Prayer is to be for God’s ear, not men’s. This does not mean that we are never to pray in public nor confess Christ in public. The meaning is that we are to live all our life for the eye of God, that we are never to perform religious acts to make an impression on others. In praying we are to seek first God’s honor before we think of our own needs. Our prayers must be unselfish – asking for others as well as for ourselves. We must forgive those who have wronged us when we ask God to forgive us. God does not care for appearances; He looks into our hearts and counts only what He sees there.
