How Video Games Can Relieve Stress

Okay, I'm not much of a gamer. Honestly, the only games I've ever played all the way through include Fallout: New Vegas and several Mario titles, which everyone knows don't really count as "incredible, life changing" games.
Anyway, I've been under a lot of stress lately, as many people are. And I discovered that playing a few hours a day, late at night when you can't sleep anyway is probably not a bad idea.
One of my favorite TV shows is South Park. It's not only funny, but it engages our sense of morality and what is right and wrong in our ever-changing society. Sometimes its downright disgusting. Other times it's heartwarming and profound. Balance people. The show has balance. It never goes too far in the sentimental direction to let you forget htat it is indeed, a television show about a bunch of 4th graders who never grow up, even though most of the time they act like adults.
South Park: Stick of Truth is a video game I've been wanting to get my hands on for a while. But somehow, I can't justify paying full price for anything except designer shoes. So I waited until the sequel, "South Park: The Fractured, But Whole" was announced at E3 and decided to look up the current price of the first game.
60.00 is a lot to pay for a game!
Luckily, Stick of Truth was on sale at my local GameStop. So...naturally, for 11 dollars, over 60 percent lower than the original.
I walked out of there with my little game, and went home, ready to play.
After I waited for that pesky Steam program to download my game disk I became a funny little kid in the South Park universe. You get to choose your own character in this game. Then you're the "new kid" in town. Some people call you new kid, but Cartman decides your name is "douchebag" so...you're a douchebag.
Blonde hair and drooping eyes just like mine. Unfortunately you can't play as a little girl so that's alright. As I walked around the South Park Universe, I thought about what it would be like to actually be there.
Might be pretty amazing. Might be a great way to let off some steam. It might be a good idea to do something for the sake of doing it, and not for a result.

So I played.

I got my ass kicked by some funny kids dressed as elves, I got read by Cartman, I met Stan's mom and Butters became my best friend.
For a moment I got frustrated and wanted to rage quit, because three little elves beat up my friend Butters and then decided I was next. After a few deep breaths I finally beat the elves and moved on to an even grander quest. It made me feel like I accomplished something. It made me feel less stressed.
It's kind of like what life did to me the other day. It basically beat me up and I decided I wanted to quit. After a few deep breaths I decided that the quest at hand isn't the quest I'll end up with.
I might even be instrumental in recovering the Stick of Truth from the damn elves altogether. I guess if we give up a quarter of the way through the game, we'll never know how awesome our skills will get...or how many times we can level up.
My stress was gone after I played Stick of Truth. It was vulgar and a little bit frustrating, but honestly I had fun. I'm nowhere near the end of the game, and I'm nowhere near the end of my time here on earth, but somewhere down the line I'm pretty sure I'll win.
I've just have to get past the damn evil elves first.

I have to disagree. Some games can make you stressed out like really hard to beat games. I've played quite a bit of games but I wouldn't call myself a gamer. I always have to deal with my brother when he gets upset over a game.
@JessicaFerrier I get that! I remember playing Fallout was stressful at times! @AimeeH I agree too! It does improve that. My little brother plays that FIFA game constantly. He says it helps him do better when he's actually playing sports.
I love video games. They are really good at relieving stress, and they also help with your hand/eye coordination. I am a huge gamer. c:
