Welcome to this weeks Throw Back Thursday! This week we find our beautiful boys from B.A.P. exploring the sounds of 1930's and 1940's swing, big band jazz and musical theatre.
The Great Depression, FDR, the rise of Hitler and jazz: the failed experiment of the prohibition had also ended in 1933, leaving alcohol accessible once again and often time in periods of great sadness beautiful music is made. The 1930's were no exception with the likes of Jelly Role Morton, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Thomm Dorsey, Duke Ellington, Woody Guthrie, and Artie Shaw. The impact of the Great Depression on 1930s music meant that those jazz performers who could draw from a larger audience would be the ones to succeed or at least survive. The most commonly heard form of the genre was "sweet" jazz as opposed to the "hot" jazz of the 1920s. Sweet jazz was more disciplined and brought in other instruments like violins to make it easier for a broader audience to appreciate. In the mid-1930s, as the Great Depression stubbornly refused to lift, jazz came as close as it has ever come to being America's popular music. It had a new name now — Swing — and its impact was revolutionary. Swing rescued the recording industry. In 1932, just 10 million records had been sold in the United States. By 1939, that number would grow to 50 million. Swing — which had grown up in the dancehalls of Harlem — would become the defining music for an entire generation of Americans.
Every decade has its unique musical styles, the people living in the 1940s were enduring the largest war in the history of the country. World War II was taking its toll on the people in the United States and abroad, but performers kept their upbeat styles to help America take their mind off of the current events of war. Not only did they continue to make fun music, many of them took their talents to the troops to help improve their morale. Early in the 1940's, young musicians such as Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, steeped in the sounds of swing, began experimenting with melodic and harmonic dissonances as well as rhythmic alterations, such as beginning and ending improvised phrases in uncommon places of measure. During this period, there were two main musical paths forged: one was a nostalgic movement that reexamined the "hot Jazz" of New Orleans. It became known as "Dixieland". The other was the new and forward looking, experimental music that preceded it: Bebop.
FUN FACT: Jazz actually sprung from communites that thrived in the south and primarily in the African American community. New Orleans was a cultural hot bed where the earliest recognizable forms of jazz music took shape. It was here that Caribbean music blended with European composition and southern blues to produce this very unique musical form known as jazz.
Young Guk: Spike Jone & The City Slickers - Cocktails for Two (1944) Motto: "Do what you like and love what you do."
DaeHyun: Woody Guthrie - Will You Miss Me? (Ft. Leadbelly) (1947) DaeHyun being the southern boy of the group, raised in Busan, I decided to give him a song by 1930's country artist, Woody Guthrie Motto: "If you will (be), I will (be)"
HimChan: Mary Martin - My Heart Belongs to Daddy (1940) A joke since he would be considered the mother of the group while YoungGuk is the father. Therefore, HimChan's heart belongs to daddy. Motto: "And when you need a rest, rest. And always do your best."
JongUp: Ella Fitzgerald - I Get a Kick Outta You (1934) Being the most awkward out of the group, I feel this song is pretty befitting of him. He's not so idealistic that he could fall for someone who is materialistic like the fellow Ella sings about in this song. Motto: "Always do what you like and do what you want to do. Try your best to be happy."
YoungJae: Judy Garland - Over the Rainbow (1939) Yeah, I did that...I went there with pop/country singer Judy Garland who also played in the original Wizard of OZ movie. The second video is an ultra rare video of Judy's original performance of this song. I have dedicated this song to YoungJae for being such a curious and knowledgeable creature. Also a dreamer. Love this kid! Motto: "Starting is half the battle."
Zelo: Fred Astaire: Puttin' on the Ritz (1930) Making fun of the rich while tap dancing dressed up like a million bucks! Yessss! Zelo is puttin' on the Ritz! "The original version of Berlin's song included references to the then-popular fad of flashily-dressed but poor black Harlemites parading up and down Lenox Avenue, "Spending ev'ry dime / For a wonderful time". "Have you seen the well-to-do, up and down Park Avenue On that famous thoroughfare, with their noses in the air High hats and Arrow collars, white spats and lots of dollars Spending every dime, for a wonderful time If you're blue and you don't know where to go to Why don't you go where fashion sits, Puttin' on the ritz. Different types who wear a daycoat, pants with stripes And cut away coat, perfect fits, Puttin' on the ritz. Dressed up like a million dollar trouper Trying hard to look like Gary Cooper (super duper) Come let's mix where Rockefellers walk with sticks Or umbrellas in their mitts Puttin' on the Ritz" Motto: "Men live and die."
Sorry but not sorry about the history lesson in music, lol. I'm sure you're all going, "who is this chick? Is she a music history major?" The answer is NO! I am just just a music history buff who wants to share her knowledge and useless information with the world. Although some or many of you may find this era of music dull and/or annoying, I think it's a beautiful contribution to our current pop culture. I really hope you enjoyed this weeks Throw Back Thursday! And I hope you're looking forward to seeing more from me!
