Ask An Afro-Latina!!

Have you ever had any questions about a different culture, but was afraid to ask? Well fear is the foundation to a bland society. I was inspired by a friend of mine @kpopandkimchi. She's doing a card called asked a Korean. If you want you should check out her card. Basically, this card is the vehicle for diversity, culture, and education. Here is a link to the card @primodiva93 made. You should check it out! If have any questions to ask me or mis amigas @alywoah, @LAVONYORK, or @primodiva93 about being a Latina...especially an Afro-Latina then comment below on our cards. I'm first on deck to make a card for your questions. Then the ladies will male their card. I will update mine with links to their cards once they make them.

BYE BYE TO THE DRAMA!

PLEASE BE RESPECTFUL WHEN ASKING QUESTIONS. WE WILL ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT BEING AN AFRO-LATINA AND ABOUT THE LATIN CULTURE. COMMENT AWAY BELOW!

When I tell people I'm Afro-Latina or Black Latina I usually get the same odd reaction. Which is fine to an extent. I know some people get confused since society has taught people that Latinos have light or slightly tan skin. Basically, look like Jennifer Lopez lol smh.

Here are some FAQ'S that I get....

1. So what is an Afro-Latina? 2. You still Black right? 3. Are you Hispnaic, Latin, or Black? 4. You speak Spanish right? 5. Latino or Hispanic? Which one is right? 6. So do you eat soul food at home Mexican food?

That's cool though let me school you....

@alywoah great question. Oh yes honey. I'm my family I was first exposed. Mi abulea is a darker Mexican woman and she always was throwing shade at lighter Latinos. My great tíos y tías...basically everyone did too. I thought they were just crazy. but when I dated a Puerto Rican guy he didn't know I was a black latina I think...cuz he was saying how Puerto Ricans are the best out of all the Latinos cuz they have light skin and colored eyes. He said Mexicans were dirty cuz they are dark and whatever. Well before I broke up with him and cussed him out in spanish cuz all I know are the cuss words lol. He was like oh you are afro Latina? I should have known. I'm like yes buddy and mi abulea is Mexican too. After a number of apologizes he will willing to change his thinking.
@orenshani7 I think some of us care so much about our ethnic heritage because it penetrates do deeply in our lives. A lot of Latin Americans are very loyal and closely connected to their history, background, and culture. Where we come from and the history along it explains the food, music, and language that we care so much about. I know for myself, and for my family, our love for heritage is much deeper than some people can understand. It's not a fleeting love, it's sort of this unwavery romance that we're so passionate and curious about.
I don't have a question, but I give mad respect to you and for this card. A lot of people brush it off as "oh you're just mixed" but I know it's a deeper background than that. Two cultures intertwining in your veins and coming out through your speech, hair, clothes, music, etc. I love it and the thought of two people from different cultural backgrounds find interest in one another. 👍❤😃
@jordanhamilton thanks. Yep we celebrate the Latin holidays. Cinco de Mayo is coming up soon. Mi abulea is already making a menu lol

I Was Stalked and Filmed on a Subway? :(
Recently I had a very creepy experience on the subway. A had a very odd man sit next to me and start filming me secretly (though obviously not so secretly since I noticed) He also tried to follow me but luckily I tricked him. For more info you can check the video below. **this is not common AT ALL in Korea, it only happened to me in Seoul because that's where I live. This could, and does, happen all over the world no matter what culture~** What I hope you take from this: 1. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. If someone sits next to you (even if it seems totally normal) just take a millisecond to recognize that - don't just stay zoned in on your phone. 2. If you feel uncomfortable - get up and move. I didn't do this but I should have. I didn't need to "prove" he really was creepy, regardless of if he was or not, I have every right to just move away. 3. If someone made you feel uncomfortable, trust your gut and keep an eye on them in some way. If I hadn't noticed him earlier, he might have followed me off the train without me knowing. 4. Let someone know where you are and what was up. Even if its just texting a close friend that is dependable "hey I'm at XYZ bus stop, there was a weird guy on the bus lol" just so someone knows. In case something happens to you, it could help people find you. 5. If you see something weird happening to another girl, try to do something. When I see guys getting too close to girls on crowded trains I always try to make it seem like I'm with the girl too so he's outnumbered, or I stare them down so they know they aren't being sneaky. Be safe out there everyone, and just be alert :)
The Real Reason for Supernatural Concepts
Remember back in 2013 when Kpop went into full supernatural concept mode? From EXO's Wolf, VIXX's On & On, Boyfriend's Bounce, etc, etc... there were vampires, aliens, werewolves galore. Nowadays in 2016, though, we're seeing a rise to realism. BTS dealing with drugs (I Need U) or Monsta X dealing with totalitarianism (All In) But, why? "Zombies are the perfect metaphor." (source) Basically, using the supernatural has always been a way of talking about real life issues, without actually bringing them up. For example, in Harry Potter House Elves would represent slaves, the discrimination and fear of werewolves represented how ridiculous racism is, etc. Fiction allows us to talk about important issues in a sly way. For example, VIXX's Hyde portrayed them as vampire-like, living in a spooky house and dark forest, growing black wings and almost being taken over by a monster. At its core, this is a song about dangerous relationships. A partner who is emotionally unstable, but charming. Hurting you but begging to have you back. This can be a metaphor for abusive relationships of all kinds. They repeat over and over that "that man isn't me, there is a crazy 'other me' inside of me." Just as abusers usually do after a moment of violent anger. Hiding this message behind the mask of "monsters" and "dark angels" makes it easier to consume and talk about. But take away the supernatural and its a serious issue they bring up. Another great example is Monster by Big Bang. They dress up as literal monsters, but talk about how just because they are different and not fitting into the society's mold they aren't bad people. It's an anthem for misfits, and a message to society to stop being so cruel. So why are we shedding the costumes now? Why are things suddenly more...real? We're done hiding. The problems can no longer stay hidden, we need to talk about them. No more using vampires and ghosts as metaphors, the general public is more comfortable discussing issues like depression, drugs, mental health, discrimination, etc. The move to realism means that we're being realistic about the problems - we're addressing them head on. That being said, there is nothing wrong with supernatural concepts being used to talk about issues! Often people can't understand something in its original form. For example, maybe someone doesn't see the need for LGBTQ+ rights. Give them a love story with a couple that is forced apart, never to be together (perhaps a vampire and a human??) because society says its unnatural. If while reading the story or watching the movie, that person feels upset about this poor couple torn apart by society, maybe they will see the correlation between their belief that gay marriage is wrong. Basically, I think that the constant changing of concept trends is fascinating and it means much more than we think!
Korean Girls Try Mexican Soda For The First Time!
Just when that whole YouTube trend of sampling foods from different cultures was losing its sparkle to me, Digitalsoju TV had to go ahead and introduce Korean girls to Jarritos. I've been wanting to write a card about Jarritos for a while now, as it's one of those Mexican sodas that are an essential part of the culture of Mexican cuisine. Sure, you can talk about Baja California seafood or the delicious carnes of central Mexico's ranching region, but what would that deliciousness be without a cold, fizzy Jarritos on the side? If you don't know Jarritos, it's an incredibly popular Mexican soda brand that's made with cane sugar and comes in a variety of flavors, including strawberry, guava, pineapple, and tamarind. In this video, the girls end up sampling the pineapple, grapefruit, mango, and guava flavors, but how does Jarritos translate in the Land of the Morning Calm? Let's look! Like any good soda, the first thing they notice is it's full of sugar. And then they all realize they're obsessed with the guava one. My favorite was the homegirl going too hard on the grapefruit. This one had her ranking all figured out. Does it match yours? Overall, these girls all agreed that Jarritos was delicious - and would be even more delicious mixed with a little vodka! You can check out their FULL commentary - plus their opinion on Squirt! - in the embedded video above. And then let me know: What's YOUR favorite Mexican soda flavor? And if you haven't tried Jarritos before, which flavor would YOU want to try? @bangtanboysfan1 @AnnahiZaragoza @fabiola12fb @abiersack666 @YeseniaLira @DianaKpop58 @reyestiny93 @AdaliaMartinez @exokpop12385 @michellefuentes @perlaaraujo73 @jessicacruz1480 @DulceOjeda @giselacampos14 @wuyifanslover @nevershoutnancy @mirandazamira @jooheony @YeseniaF @SunnyV @IlseJimenez @KpopGaby @NelyJoss @aabxo @aliciasalinas @ThyaremyCreator @Cuetlatchli @Sunflower18 @purplem00n23 @jannatd93 @Luci546 @ALEXCAMACHO @TehDL @buddyesd @JocelynPacheco @SarahRegulski @MyAffairWith @FelipeZambrano @LindaGuandique @KassyGuz96 @XDLP @alywoah @FelipeZambrano
What Do The Protests in Seoul Look Like Now?
This past Friday the Korean Constitutional Court (think of it as the US Supreme Court) ruled unanimously that Park Geun Hye should be officially impeached. Since most of the country wanted this (at her lowest I think she has a 10% approval rating) there were massive celebrations in the streets. There were musicians, free food stalls, and fireworks. Now of course there are plenty of (mostly elderly) people rioting and claiming that this is the end of democracy (when really its just an example of democracy working...) but they are in contained areas surrounded by police. As far as I know 2 people died and many more are injured but its been due to violence by the pro-Park side (for example, the rioters were trying to flip over a police bus and knocked over a speaker which fell and killed an elderly man who was part of the riot...) I walked through the celebration area the day after the announcement if you'd like to take a look and hear the sounds. Skip to 4:20 unless you want to see my friends new cafe opening party haha :) If you could all do me a really big favor: Please give this video a thumbs up on YouTube here. People have been leaving incredibly nasty comments targeting myself and my family (I have deleted and blocked most of them) and this video now has some of the most down-votes I've ever had on a video :/ That would really mean a lot! Thank you ㅠㅠ Korea now has to vote for a new president so that will be starting as we speak :)
