The GDC Awards happened last night and a lot of titles won some things but I think that this animated tribute to former Nintendo CEO, Satoru Iwata, had to be one of the shining moments of the whole ceremony.
It doesn't matter if you're a lifelong gamer or if you only play the Wii when you go to your grandmother's house because she loves that bowling game, you've probably experienced or used something he helped create.
When he passed away last summer it felt like a huge surprise. Usually I don't react to "celebrity deaths" or the death of people I've never met but Iwata's passing affected me a lot more than I could have ever expected it to. It's something I can't explain.
And watching this animated short, all those feelings came back again but instead of being overwhelmingly bummed, I felt like it was a beautiful little film. It's an amazing tribute to one of the most important names in video games.
So, if you'll excuse me... I'm going to rub the sand out of my eyes.
