Why 1996 is The Best Year in Gaming
Wow. 1996. What a year. I was an even smaller hamster than I was in that other card about 1998. Okay, okay, I know what you're thinking, "How can '96 be the best year if you already said '98 was?" Well, here's your answer you dingus:

Every year is the best goddamn year in video games because we get to play them.

So, without any further interruptions from the class, here are 4 games that made 1996 one of the best years in video games.

Super Mario 64

I never owned a Nintendo 64 so I never got to sit alone and play through all of Mario 64 but I've got to say that it was easily one of my favorite games I've played. It opened the door for 3D platformers and to be honest with you, if you put this cartridge in your system and play it again, it'll still hold up. Everything about the mechanics are tight and for the time, it was truly a mindblowing experience.

Mario Kart 64

Mario Kart 64 is a game that I assumed I would never have any fun playing. But it brought the series and racing games into the 3D world much like Super Mario 64 did with platformers. I think I've spent more time playing this game with friends and family than I ever did playing any game. It's still one worth going back to but all the future iterations of this game are, hands-down, pretty amazing.

Crash Bandicoot

If you've been following me and my cards and My Life in Video Games for a while now, then you know that I absolutely love Crash Bandicoot. This is one of the first games I completely lost myself in. I ended up playing every game in the series on the PlayStation One. There's something so heartwarming about Crash and how much of an idiot he actually is that makes me feel like I'm not alone.

Tomb Raider

In retrospect, Tomb Raider is extremely problematic with its representation of Lara Croft (I wrote about this last week) but it's still an important game in the history of video games. It unearthed (pun intended) a new type of genre for console/PC games. Adventuring and exploring tombs was the most fun for me when I'd play this game as a kid. And this game also holds a very special place in my heart because it's one of the first games my dad and I played together as a team and it paved the way for other games we've played together during my youth.
How was 1996 in games for you? Is there anything I missed out on? Or were you a young little barely born baby during this time?

-Every year IS the best goddamn year in gaming! Lol I realized I didn't like platform games after I got angry at Donkey Kong 64, so I never played Super Mario 64 or any other platform games. I didn't play Crash until I got a demo disc for the PS2 that had a demo of Crash, Matt Hoffman's BMX, Spiro, and I <3 Katamari. 1996 is the year that the N64 came out. I didn't get one until years later, though. Some notable games, (in my opinion) that came out in 96... Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars for the SNES. It was a great game with gameplay and mechanics similar to Final Fantasy. I love my RPGs! Tetris Attack for the SNES. One of my favorite games, ever! A fast paced puzzle game that helped pave the way for the many, many match 3 games we have now.
