It's been a while nakamas! I have been away because of college (who would've guessed...) Anyways, even though I haven't been posting, I have been watching the community grow and I love how the anime community has grown to such level. I'll try to make cards in my free time. With that said, let's get back to more anime~
Genre: Action, Comedy, Martial Arts, Adventure
Yasuri Shichika, seventh successor of the Kyoto Ryu (bladeless) sword art, lives on an isolated island with his older sister, Nanami.
One day Shichika is visited by a woman named Togame, who requests his aid in her quest to find and collect the final twelve swords forged by the legendary master swordsmith, Shikizaki Kiki. Shichika and Togame begin their odyssey by leaving the island he called home for over 20 years. They will face twelve individuals who possess and protect Shikizaki's legendary swords.
Join Shichika and Togame on an exciting, epic adventure that defies reality as they discover the true potential of the Kyoutoryuu sword style!
Status: Completed (12 Episodes)
A very simple story where the protagonists fight to the death to collect 12 legendary swords with the goal to obtain power for the government and to make it better. Every sword has a unique ability and have many different forms and the owners make each episode fresh. However, it's not only about collecting swords. While Shichika and Togame quest for the swords, it tells many side stories with random events and backstories from both the protagonists and the side characters for that episode.
The characters are fantastic! Shichika and his sister are the last generation of "Kyoutoryuu" which is a sword style that can't use swords (it sounds stupid I know) but it actually works wonders for the story. Kyoutoryuu users don't use swords not because they don't want to but because they CAN'T. Instead, they use their bodies as the swords so basically Shichika IS a sword. The main reason I love him is because he's not a pussy like so many characters in todays animes. He is also naive with everything outside of the island he was exiled to which makes the interaction with Togame that much more enjoyable.
The other protagonist is Togame who is a strategist for the government who recruits Shichika as her sword to collect the swords. He has the tendency to order around Shichika for everything. Annoying to some extent (specially in the first few episodes) but she becomes a lovable character as the anime goes. Also weak and temperamental but in a sense very smart. Besides these two, there are so many characters that make each episode unique as the sword owners appear only once (their own episodes). There's bound to be a character for every viewer.
1. Meiya Kadenrō by Minami Kuribayashi
2. Katana to Saya by ALI PROJECT
3. Hakushukassai Utaawase by Supercell
The soundtrack is breathtaking~ The openings get you pumped for the anime, the OST/background music helps you immerse into the ambiance of the episode, the voice acting is great and lastly, every episode has a different ending. This is one of those that can't really be explained with words but rather you have to experience it.
-Reasons to Watch-
There are so many things to say about the anime but I'll "try" to make it short. To start with the plot is simple but original and the fact that Kyoutoryuu is a sword style that doesn't use swords is weird and sounds stupid, my god... they nailed it. Each episode has a new character, tons of comedy and action, and a load of different genres. Also the episodes are 1 hr episodes and the reason is because when this anime came out, they released an episode every month instead of every week. Thankfully, we don't have to wait but I believe this was one of the main reasons why the anime didn't make it big.
All of the features I wrote about above make the anime one of the best under-rated hidden gems. The characters are unique, the chemistry between them is fantastic and there's so much variety. The music is everywhere! and once again, it's hard to explain with words. It's genre is action and adventure but it literally has a little of everything. Lastly, I really can't emphasize enough of this, but the artstyle is beautiful! It doesn't feel like any other. It's gentle, natural, detailed and it doesn't try to be flashy just for the sake of being flashy.
* Beautiful in every aspect
* Variety in genre, characters and music
* 1 hr episodes!
* The artstyle might not be for everyone
* 1 hr episodes (depending who you ask)
* Mixed opinions regarding the ending
