Shane Black's latest effort, The Nice Guys, is a movie I'm extremely excited to see this summer. Even though I wasn't the biggest fan of his work with Iron Man 3, it's hard to deny that Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang is one of the best crime-thrillers to have come out in a long time.
And seeing that he's returning to that world of pulp crime/mystery gets me excited. Black has a way of moving in and out of violence and comedy like it's nothing. If genres were like lanes on a freeway, he'd have no problem swerving his way to the exit.
The latest trailer for The Nice Guys reflects this but it also does something else that I'm really fond of, it makes Ryan Gosling a giant loser.
It's easy to cast someone who looks like Ryan Gosling and make him the strong silent type. But in The Nice Guys, he's the wimp, the loser, the one who's afraid. And it, surprisingly, works. I'd forgotten how funny Gosling could actually be as an actor. So I'm glad I'm getting a reminder with this trailer (and movie when it comes out).
I'm excited to see how this movie turns out. From the way it's being marketed it looks like it's going to be a fun little crime comedy but knowing how certain moments of Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang play out, I feel like it's going to be a lot more than that.
The Nice Guys will be in theaters on May 20th, 2016.
