Spiked Drinks - Do You Know What To Do?
We've heard it from high school counselors, our parents, from random PSAs on TV, but are you sure you know what to do when you or your friend starts feeling funny after a bit of drinking?

Rebel Wilson recently tweeted about a very scary experience she had which goes to show that spiking drink is still a common thing.

It's a real danger whether you're in high school or you're a celeb in a trendy club. Here's what you need to know:

Help Prevent Drink Spiking:

Unfortunately, we all still need to be careful about this issue - so here are some steps you can take to keep yourself and your friends safe.
1. Never leave your drink unattended and keep an eye on your friends' drinks.
Even if you just walk away for a second, don't leave your drink out in the open on the bar or table.
2. Don't accept a drink from someone you don't know.
That cutie that just bought you a drink and brought it over to you? Unless you saw the drink being poured and it was handed directly to you, if its a stranger...don't drink it.
3. Consider sticking to bottled drinks and avoiding punch bowls or jugs of cocktails.
Something that closes is a lot safer than a solo cup or punch bowl!
4. If you think your drink has been tampered with, don't drink it – tell a trusted friend or relative immediately.
Let someone know immediately so that if suddenly you are unable to control yourself or you go missing someone knows why and can get you the help you need.

Is My Drink Spiked?

Most date rape drugs take effect within 15-30 minutes and symptoms usually last for several hours. As soon as you feel something is wrong, tell someone (see below) or if it is too late and you wake up confused, go get tested (also see below)
You might also feel:
- Difficulty concentrating or speaking
- Loss of balance and finding it hard to move
- Blurred vision
- Memory loss or "blackouts"
- Feeling confused or disorientated, particularly after waking up (if you've been asleep)
- Paranoia
- Nausea and vomiting
A lot of these symptoms come from heavy drinking as well, but if you are struggling to remember details from the night before, talk to someone you trust that might know what happened.

My drink is spiked, what do I do?

1. Tell someone you completely trust (a close friend, relative, police, etc)
1a. If you aren't with anyone, call someone you trust and get to a safe place.
2. If you need urgent help, call 911. Do not accept help from a stranger (even if they've been talking to you all night) and don't accept rides from anyone you don't completely trust.
3. Report it to the police as soon as you can. They will take blood and urine samples. Most drugs leave the body within 72 hours of being taken (the date rape drug leaves the body within 12 hours), so it's important to be tested as soon as possible.

Please also watch out for your friends, because all it takes is a moment of carelessness for something really horrible to happen.

Yes!! Thanks for all this information! I help teach a drug/alcohol awareness and safety class in college, and you would be so surprised with the stuff people had to share. It's truly scary. But talking and educating about it really helps people be a lot more aware. And can help us help each other.
