Heyo! I'm Alexander Beta, and today I will be showing you all how to easily make an exploding planet effect using the free program Paint.NET. Download is at the bottom of the card. If you get stuck, or don't understand something, make sure to email me! I'd be happy to help you out! (

Step 1)

Google Image search "Cracked ground" and find one that you like. If you want to make it easy on yourself, you can use the same image that I'm using. The link is at the bottom of the card. Once you find an image you like, save it to your desktop and open it up with Paint.NET

Step 2)

Hit "S" three times. Hold down left click and make a nice sized circle. Hit Ctrl + I to invert your selection, and then delete it.

Step 3)

We're going to have to enlarge the image. Hit Ctrl + Shift + R to open up a resizing window. Resize it to make a nice amount of space around the dirt circle. Click "OK". Now there's a bunch of white stuff around the planet. Ew. Lets take the Magic Wand tool, left click on the white, and delete it.

Step 4)

In the top left hand corner of your screen, go to Effects > Distort > Bulge. A window will appear. Adjust the bulge to your liking. I find that a bulge of 39 is a good number.

Step 5)

Now invert the image by hitting Ctrl + Shift + I. Hit Ctrl + Shift + U to open up the Hue & Saturation window. Make your planet any colour you want, just make note that the colour is inverted, so whatever colour you want your planet to be, make your Hue the opposite. You should also play with the Saturation and Lightness, in order to get that just right colour. Once you've found it, hit "OK".

Step 6)

Now hit Ctrl + Shift + D to duplicate the layer. Go to the bottom right corner of your screen, and in the layers panel, hit the Properties icon. Change the Blending Mode to "Colour Burn", and hit "OK".

Step 7)

Hit Ctrl + Shift + D to duplicate the layer and click the Properties icon again. This time, change the Blending Mode to "Additive" and hit "OK".

Step 8)

Merge all of the layers together by clicking the Merge Layer Down icon in your layers panel twice.

Step 9)

Now we need to add some glow. At the top left hand corner of your screen, go to Effects > Photo > Glow. Adjust it to your liking. Make not that the higher the contrast, the more cracks will appear in your planet.

Step 10)

Hit Ctrl + Shift + D to duplicate the image again. ow we're going to add some zoom effects. In the top left hand corner of your screen, go to Effects > Blurs > Zoom Blur. Adjust it to your liking. I like to set the Zoom Blur fairly high.

Step 11)

On the image we just blurred, go to the Properties icon in the layers panel again. Adjust the Blending Options to "Lighten". Now merge it down so that we have one single image.

Step 12)

Find a nice picture of space. If you want to use the one I used, follow the link at the bottom of this card. Save your picture of space to your desktop, and open it with Paint.NET.

Step 13)

Select the entire image with the Rectangle Select tool. Hit Ctrl + C to copy the image.

Step 14)

Navigate to the picture of your exploding planet. Create a new layer, and place it under your exploding planet layer.

Step 15)

Hit Ctrl + V to paste your space picture in your new layer. Resize it to fit your photo, and then hit Ctrl + D to deselect the image.

You're Done!

That's it! That is all you have to do to make a super cool exploding planet effect using Paint.NET. If you have any questions, comments, or issues, make sure to email me, and I will help you resolve them. ( Make sure to upload and share your images with me! I love seeing other people's works!
