Hello nakamas! This is actually an updated review from the one I did last year. The reason is I made the other review when it was still ongoing but the company took a long break and people just forgot about it. So I'm updating this review as it's finally finished!
Genre: Action, Supernatural, Military, Fantasy
Anime adaptation of Bandai Namco's PSP action game series "God Eater."
Set in a post-apocalyptic Japan in the year 2071. The world has been mostly destroyed by mysterious monsters known as the Aragami. An organization known as Fenrir was made to exterminate Aragami using 'God Arcs', weapons made from Aragami cells. Those who specialize in exterminating Aragami are known as God Eaters. Their God Arcs originally could only keep a single form, however a new type has been discovered that can switch between gun and blade form. Since then, they have been classified new-types and the previous as old-types.
Status: Completed (13 Episodes)
I have to be honest, it's nothing new but nothing overused either. Set on the not so distant apocalyptic future where people try to survive fighting against the "Aragami" which are demons sent by God to destroy human kind and reset life on earth. Those chosen ones are called "God Eaters" and fight these demons with special weapons made from cores that the demons have in them (It sounds complicated but its not). Lastly, the main job of the God Eaters is to kill Aragamis, extract their cores and build "Aegis" (a gigantic underground dome) to shelter all human kind.
They are just so cool holy sh*t! and there are so many of them as well. However, you'll mostly be watching the three up there. Lenka (Main protagonist) is your typical anime "I want/need to save everyone" character who's naive at the beginning and ends up with the most character development at the end. Lindow is the captain of the team and he's the badass of the anime that no matter what he does, it seems cool as f*ck! Lastly, there's Alisa. She is somehow the face of the games, manga, anime, etc. Gorgeous, sexy, strong but with a lot of problems (who would have thought) but give her some time and you'll end up loving her. Supporting characters, as always, do a fantastic job to enhance the experience with interesting backstories and interactions. No complaints on this department.
If you know me, I'm in love with some good anime music and "God Eater" doesn't disappoint. The opening ("Feed A" by Oldcodex) does a fantastic job in getting you pumped for the action packed anime you're about to watch. While the ending ("Ruined Land" by Go Shiina ft. Naomi) will help you relax after all the action OR it will bring the FEELS to another level with those tragic episodes. Then there's the OST...I just couldn't get enough! The ambiance music is breath-taking. It will always make the situation better. On those epic moments, it will make it even more epic. Tragic moments, even more tragic. Inspirational moments, even more and so on! Lastly, the voice acting. Unfortunately, the voice acting was sub-par compared to everything else in sound. Don't get me wrong, the acting was fine but sometimes the sync was pretty bad. It doesn't happen frequently but when it happens you'll know.
-Reasons to Watch-
If you love fast-paced, action-packed animes with a good story, definitely worth watching! The story, as mentioned above, it's nothing new nor overused and it works, what else is there to say? Variety of characters all of them with an interesting backstory and personalities. Sound is fantastic in every aspect excluding those few moments where the voice acting and the animation are not in sync. Furthermore, something I haven't really mentioned yet, the animation is AMAZING! It's hard to describe it but it's so detailed (specially the Aragamis) and it doesn't fell like anything we've watched before. Sometimes I even thought it was the game I was watching.
Also, there's something I didn't notice the first time I watched it. The setting is very similar to "Attack on Titan". There's a big wall protecting people, a few chosen one fight the demons, bloody and action packed, etc. Not that it bothers me at all but something noting. If you were curious, The manga for "AoT" came before the first "God Eater" game. Lastly, the pace of the anime. Not every episode is full of action, as it should be, some episodes will be about the story which are needed to understand the anime (not fillers). Because of this, the pace of the anime changes a lot from fast to slow and vice-versa.
* Fantastic in every aspect
* Unique animation
* Similar setting to "Attack on Titan"
* Not new nor overused story
* Noticeable bad voice - animation sync
* Frequent change of pace
