You can call it whatever you want: writer's block, boredom, depression. I'm not sure. The reality is, that on this day in 2016 I have no ideas. Nothing to offer. All I want to do is sleep, and forget about all of my obligations.
When things start to pile up on you, you can start to feel it physically. Your body will start to give out as soon as your mind really needs you. It's incredible really, every time I have a lot of things to accomplish, I get sick, or something terrible happens. Regardless, I have no ideas.
Anyway, here are some ideas of what to do when you don't have any...ideas.
Change your surroundings.
One thing I like to do when a period like this strikes me, is to change my surroundings. Unfortunately today is full of obligations, so that's not an option, but most importantly getting out of your room, house or work is a great idea. Sometimes getting rid of the mundane is the first step to doing something extraordinary.
Going to a coffee shop, or alternative work location might spark some creative thoughts, but if you're too tired to even do that, it might be a good idea to just take a break and get your mind off of all things work related, if that's possible.
Start reading / watching something that'll inspire you.
Honestly, all great ideas come from other ideas you know? Like when you read something that's really compelling, and then you get inspired in turn? Ring a bell? Anyway, if you're stuck for something to write about, or something to think about or something to talk about, then engaging with media other than your own mind will be a really great use of time. Just think about it, your next big idea could be just around the corner.
Look up the greats in your profession and read about what they were doing at your age.
People take time to learn their crafts, and discover what makes them tick. It's hard to figure out whether you're on schedule, ahead of schedule or totally effing behind. Regardless, a lot of amazing people took their sweet old time trying to figure out what they wanted to do and how to do it. So give yourself a break already!
Then finally, give yourself a break.
If it means taking a few days off and going off the grid, so be it. It's one thing to burn yourself out at both ends, but it's another to exhaust yourself. Despite the consequences, you might want to consider what a long leave of absence can do for you. Maybe a week or two without any work or contact with non-essential people is just what you need. Consider it!
Then, after all of that...you might get your ideas back.
