Chapter 2: New Possibilities My mouth stayed agape until the three returned to the car. Ga Yeon and Chanyeol were chattering excitedly about something while Soo Hyun laughed at them. Going solo..I wouldn’t have to worry about the other members anymore..I could write my own songs again..but I’d be by myself. “Chanyeol-ah, you ride in the front, I want to sit in the back with Ga Yeon.” Soo Hyun said, pushing him to the front seat as he opened the back door. He nodded and smiled at me. I was still in a state of shock so I just looked at him. “You alright?” He asked as he sat down and put his seatbelt on. I looked back down at my phone then looked back at him, quickly putting a finger to my lips then showed him the message. His eyes widen then he broke out in a huge smile. “That’s great!” He whispered, quietly clapping. “Let’s talk about it when we get home.” He said, nudging me. “When are you going to see him?” He asked as I turned the car on. “I guess in a couple hours..?” I whispered back to him. “Unnie, I know Chanyeol oppa can play a couple different instruments, can you?” Ga Yeon asked suddenly. “Oh..uh I can play two songs on the piano and two on the guitar.” I said as I pulled the car back onto the street and started the 10 minute drive back to the house. “Oh, you should show us when we get back. Do you have to work today?” Soo Hyun asked. “In a couple hours.” “Yeah, you should show us.” Chanyeol nudged me, winking. I laughed at him then nodded. Suddenly, my group’s debut song was playing on the radio. All three of them yelled excitedly, causing me to laugh at them. Chanyeol was mumbling the lyrics as Hyomin and Mimi rapped. The girls in my group were honestly my best friends since day 1. Mimi is the leader and rapper, Sungjin is our oldest, Sunjoon is our dancer who makes a lot of our choreography, Hyomin is our maknae and other rapper. I’m the main vocalist and people call me the visual. Hyomin and I share the same day and month for our birthday, but I’m four years older than her. She’s adorable. Horrible at aegyo, which is why we always make her do it. Well..that and the fact that she’s the maknae and maknaes always have to do aegyo. “Where did you guys get this song from?” Soo Hyun asked as my part came on. “I wrote and composed it.” I said, shyly. “Really?!” All three of them exclaimed. “Wow, you’re so talented. Have you done anymore songs since then?” Soo Hyun asked. “No, my members did. I think it was Mimi unnie that wrote the majority of the newest album.” I said, biting my lip as I thought of how well my song did compared to hers. Is that why I’m being offered a solo? Chanyeol nudged me again and raised his eyebrows. I just mimicked his expression and then looked back at the road. He giggled then the song ended and I pulled the car up to the house. We all got out and I was singing under my breath, feeling instantly lighter from the text. Although, there was a sense out doom looming in my heart. It felt like there was some sort of catch to this. It felt too good to be true. I grabbed a couple bags of groceries and walked in the house. “Unnie, are you going to show us now?” Ga Yeon asked excitedly as we all set the groceries down. “Which do you want to hear first? Piano or guitar? I’d have to borrow your guitar if that’s alright, Chanyeol.” I said, putting the groceries away. “That’s fine with me, as long as you don’t break it.” He said, seriously. “I promise I’ll take good care of her.” I laughed. “What songs are they?” Soo Hyun asked. “You’ll see. I’ll do piano first since that’s already down here.” I suggested as the last few groceries got put up. “Wait until I get back with my guitar.” Chanyeol said. I nodded and walked over to the piano, cracking my knuckles comically. Nervousness flooded into my veins. I haven’t played the piano or guitar for people other than a few people at my label. Soo Hyun and Ga Yeon sat down on the couch and looked over at me patiently. Sitting down, I stared at the ivory keys. It feels so weird to be here. “Alright, go ahead.” Chanyeol said, walking down the stairs with his guitar in his hand and Se Ho trailing behind him. I took a deep breath and nodded. “I’ll do the easier one first.” I said, playing River Flows In You by Yiruma. “This isn’t too special, it’s just my favorite song to play on the piano.” I laughed, embarrassed by my lack of skill. “I like it. Do the next one.” Chanyeol encouraged. “Alright.” I said before taking a deep breath and playing All of Me by John Legend. I could see surprise fill their faces as I started to sing. “What would I do without your smart mouth Drawing me in, and you kicking me out Got my head spinning, no kidding, I can’t pin you down What’s going on in that beautiful mind? I’m on your magical mystery ride And I’m so dizzy, don’t know what hit me, but I’ll be alright My head’s under water But I’m breathing fine You’re crazy and I’m out of my mind ‘Cause all of me loves all of you Love all your curves and all your edges All your perfect imperfections Give your all to me I’ll give my all to you You’re my end and my beginning Even when I lose I’m winning ‘Cause I give you all of me And you give me all of you, oh.” I continued to sing and play the song, forgetting my tiny audience. Even though my fingers and voice where busy playing the slow song, my head was racing with thoughts. What if he sent me the text by mistake and he meant to send it to someone else in the company? Or one of my other members? What if someone found his phone and decided to mess with me? Should I really show up? Should I get my hopes up? Is it all a trick? What do I believe? “Wow!” Se Ho yelled, clapping loudly as the song came to an end, bringing me out of my panicked thoughts. I blushed and looked over to see all 4 of them with surprised faces. “I’m not done showing my limited skill off yet.” I laughed, standing up and sitting next to Chanyeol on the couch. He delicately handed me the guitar and I got situated before strumming and remembering the next song. Perfect by P!nk. “Made a wrong turn once or twice Dug my way out blood and fire Bad decisions that’s alright Welcome to my silly life Mistreated, misplaced, misunderstood Miss ‘no way, it’s all good’ It didn’t slow me down Mistaken, always second guessing Underestimated, look I’m still around Pretty, pretty please don’t you ever ever feel Like you’re less than, less than perfect Pretty, pretty please, if you ever ever feel Like you’re nothing, you are perfect to me.” The thoughts filled my head again despite the song I was singing. Am I even good enough to go solo? Will I even succeed? I looked down at the ground and felt tears pricking at my eyes. “Estrange ourselves and we do it all the time Why do we do that? Why do I do that? Why do I do that?” The look on their faces when I hit the high note, priceless. I laughed at them despite the thoughts swimming in my head. Their clapping when the song was done doubled since the last song, making me realize that my audience had grew. Kang Joon, Nana, Min Woo, and Mama Shin were standing behind the couch. “You’re really good at singing in English!” Nana commented. “I would hope so. English is my first language.” I said, debating whether I should actually play the next song or not. “This next one is kind of embarrassing to play, considering the original singer is here.” I said, pointing to Chanyeol. “Do it!” He yelled, making me laugh. “Alright!” I yelled back before playing The First Snow by EXO and Chanyeol sang with me, comforting me slightly. “On this afternoon as the first snow is falling If only I could call you, I’d be so happy A year has already passed, but I’m still not over you So I talk to myself, “I’m lonely.”” “Turn back the clock,” Chanyeol sang. “If only I could go back one year,” I sang. Our duet mixed with the slow clapping of our audience. “Turn back my heart,” “Would we be different now?” “Yeah it’s a stupid thought, but still, what if” “If I met you, would tears rise up? The foolish me wouldn’t be able to say anything Tell me, Merry Merry Christmas Hi, how have you been?
When the snow falls, my bruised heart Will it be covered with white? I’m sorry I didn’t treat you well That Christmas, I was only filled with regrets.” I smiled and let Chanyeol sing his original part. “I walked alone on a street filled with lights Everyone looks so happy.” We kept singing and the others seemed to love it. Once the song was over we got the biggest applause out of all the songs, maybe because it was with Yeol. “I didn’t expect you to know how to play that.” He laughed. “I really liked it and kind of taught myself it.” I said, blushing. “You did well.” He clapped. I smiled at him. If someone as popular as him comments on me, maybe I have hope at going solo. The others started to compliment me, but were interrupted by my CEO texting me again, matched with a text from my manager. “Ms. Song, can you come in now? I sent your manager to pick you up.” “Nari-ah, I’m outside the house.” “I have to go, I’ll see you all later.” I told everyone, handing Chanyeol his guitar and waving to everyone, receiving a thumbs up and a big smile from him. Once I got into the car, my manager was deadly silent. He would usually joke with me or something, but he was quiet and tense. The tension rolled off him in waves, making the air thick and suffocating. He didn’t say anything as we drove to the building. As we pulled up to the building, I could see the ‘fans’ standing outside the building with signs telling the CEO to disband us. “Good luck.” My manager said, not getting out of the car. This must be really serious if he’s not accompanying me. I bit my lip and walked passed the girls gathered at the front, greeting them. “Nari unnie! What are you doing here?” One girl with pigtails asked. “Oh, I’m talking to my CEO about something. He called me in.” I said, walking slowly towards the door. “Oh?! Maybe he’s finally offering you a solo!” A couple girls yelled. I laughed at them then shrugged and waved as I walked in and made my way to his office. When I finally got to it, I knocked on his door and walked in to see the rest of my group sitting there. “Ah, Nari, you’ve finally arrived. Sit down and let’s get started. Now I’m sure you’re all confused as to why everyone is gathered here. Well, to tell you straight, I am going to offering one of you a solo. You can consider this a test. As you know, your last album has not done well. So, if you do well on your solo, I will not disband you and you will continue to be in this company. So decide on one person to go solo or we can have a competition to have you come up with 5 songs and whoever has the best out of you five will go solo. You’re choice. Just know that your futures are depending on this choice. Choose wisely. I want an answer by the end of today. You’re dismissed.”
