When Your Man Makes His Own Plate...
Haha! I have had something similar happen to me. I never really noticed gender roles or expectations growing up...until I started dating my first boyfriend. I remember I was at a family barbecue with my family and my boyfriend at the time. When the food was ready, I served my own plate and sat back down.

AND THEN I GOT THE MEANEST LOOK FROM MY ABUELA LIKE SHE WAS GOING TO KILL ME.

Me: What?
Abuela: Serve your man! What are you doing?
Me: He can serve --
Abuela: Make his plate!

OK ABUELA DAMN.

I don't know if I was scarred from the moment, or that I've become succumb to the Latino-traditional ways of relationships, but I now I prepare a plate for whoever I am dating. It's something I don't even think about anymore. I just do it. Sometimes I do ask, "do you want fix your own plate?" If I don't feel like doing it. >:)

If you're Latino, have you noticed doing things like this?
If you're not Latino, is your culture/family pretty traditional in gender expectations & relationsips?

I serve my boyfriend, but that's just because we've been living together for close to 5 years, and I know what he likes and how much to give him. Otherwise, I agree with @shannonl5. I'd tell him to get his own so I'm not standing there for an hour, trying to figure out what he wants. Lol.

Omg, this is like my family too. I always thought it was super ridiculous how the women would be in the kitchen until the food was ready, and the men would be sitting in the living room watching tv and talking.

I have never heard of this. Shows you how much culture I have been exposed to. UGH! Anyhow, friends of mine are Guatemalan and their mom had this huge glass cabinet of all the fancy china that no one was allowed to touch! Well, one day I was having a bowl of cereal, and took it upon myself to grab a fancy bowl from the cabinet. My friends were like, WHAT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?! And when their mom noticed, she was beaming with pride. She was ecstatic that I was eating from one of her good bowls. Everyone else was terrified. I loved that moment!

@marshalledgar haha! My abuela has a cabinet of fancy china too. She only takes it out for Thanksgiving dinner. I don't know how my abuela would feel if someone ate cereal out of them lol.
