Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world.
People love the stuff and can't seem to get enough of it. An important question crossed my mind in regards to the coffee bean: how do we keep up with the ever growing demand of this item?
Today, I got the answer to that question, as I found out that we are more than likely drinking "Counterfeit" coffee.
Most of the world drinks the milder Arabica bean, but some growers will throw in cheaper Robusta beans, better known to most people as “instant coffee,” to bulk up their profits.
Basically, many people are enjoying watered down coffee and don't even know it. If there's one thing I've learned recently it's that taste is based as much on perception as it is on reality.
So for those people spending 15 bucks for a premium blend, good luck with that. Odds are if I gave you two cups with no label, you probably couldn't tell the difference.
@Animaniafreak They have multiple blends! And I'd imagine that growing region would affect the flavor, but robustas have a harder time holding onto the subtle notes of their growing region. That's one of the reasons their quality kind of sucks.
@danidee does starbucks use one blend only? or do they have multiple blends?
Also lol @RaquelArrendondo, my parents were always about dat Folgers crystals life too.
That's one of the things I learned when I worked at Starbucks. Robusta beans = bad!!
Haha profit indeed! My father drinks Folgers at home and recently, he's been demanding coffee everyday. I liked this card!
