On this day in 1939, Marvin Gaye was born.
Yeah, I'm a young guy, but I have was raised on the classics.. which meant a lot of Al Green and Marvin Gaye.
Marvin was a polarizing musician and personality. His work touched on numerous topics, but mostly love and politics.
One of his most powerful songs "What's Goin On'" shook the world due to it's comments on the war. Gaye's later recordings influenced several contemporary R&B subgenres, such as quiet storm and neo-soul.
Marvin died very young, as he was shot and killed by his father at the age of 44. Since his death, many institutions have posthumously bestowed Gaye with awards and other honors—including the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame, the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
So in honor of Marvin, I have posted a couple of his classic songs below. Feel free to share your favorite Marvin Gaye track via comment with your fellow Vinglers.
