The Raptors may not have a superstar, but they may have the best team in the East in 2016.
The Raptors are 3 games behind the Cavs and have locked the #2 seed in the playoffs. They have gotten better as the season progressed. They have solid playoff experience and mesh well as a unit.

So why are the media outlets shying away from mentioning Toronto as one of the favorites to go all the way in 2016?

The Raptors deserve to get more attention at this point in the season.
Kyle Lowry is the best point guard no one is talking about in the NBA. He has been amazing this year, posting a stat line of 22pts, 6 assists and 5 rebounds a night.
Demar Derozan is also have an All-NBA caliber season. Once considered to be just a high flyer, Derozan has developed a solid all around game. Both of these guys also live at the line, so they don't rely on their jump shots all game. The team has a solid roster of role players around them that protect the rim and rebound.
While Dwayne Casey may not be one of the top 5 coaches in the NBA, he has more playoff experience than the majority of his counterparts in the East. He has been in tough playoff moments before, and is ready to turn the corner as a coach.

Are the Raptors contenders for the title this year?

Nah.....def not.
They might win the East, but not the whole thing.
They def look weaker than Cleveland, but you never know what is going to happen. But objectively speaking, even if they make it to the Finals, it's going to be a tough one against the Warriors or the Spurs.
