A Brazilian tattoo artist Flavia Carvalho is transforming upsetting scars into tattoos. Her focus is on positively impacting the lives of those who have been through domestic violence. Although I have never been through that sort of abuse, I do have a large scar (with a painful backstory) that I've covered with a tattoo, so I think is it a great project she has come up with!
Carvalho is also a survivor of abuse, and can related to those who come in to get their scars covered up.
"I was suddenly struck by the idea of providing free tattoos to women who were left with scars following domestic violence or mastectomies. Each tattoo would act as an instrument for empowerment and a self-esteem booster," Carvalho said. (Huffington Post)
The project's name refers to the Portuguese expression "A flor da pele," which means deeper than skin. It also alludes that all women are like flowers and deserve to have our skin protected and embellished.
