Frigiliana (Spain)
Photographer Anton Milyuganov "Spain has many beautiful villages, but Frigiliana has to be up there as one of the most beautiful, in fact, the village of Frigiliana has received a number of awards for its beauty and conservation. Frigiliana also holds a special place for me and my family as my Grandfather was from this village and my Mother was born here. The village itself is located about 6 km from Nerja and about 56 km from Malaga. The centre of town lies at an altitude of 435 metres above sea level and from most parts of town you get incredible views of the Sierra Almijara ranges and of Nerja and the Mediterranean below. The village is comprised of 2 sections: The old part of town, which is of Moorish origin, and the newer part of town which is built in the traditional style of a white Andalucian village. Frigiliana Spain The old Moorish part of town is one of the best preserved Moorish villages in all of Andalucia. The importance of the Moorish history to the village is evident in the ceramic mosaics that are dotted around the old part of town. These mosaics, designed by Pilar Garcia Millan, narrate the story of the Moorish uprising in the area. Following the conquest of Frigiliana and other nearby towns by the Catholic monarchs in 1487, the moors suffered great oppression. This led to a Moorish uprising and on 11 June 1569, one of the main battles fought during the Moorish uprising was fought in Frigiliana." [Source: http://www.discover-nerja.com/frigiliana-spain.html]
