Choi Eun-seol (Shin Se-kyung) arrives home to find her parents murdered. When the murderer is distracted, she escapes but is hit by a car. Eun-seol's parents are later found with a barcode carved into their skin, the work of the "Barcode" serial killer. The lead detective on the case, Oh Jae-pyo (Jung In-gi) realizes that the now-comatose daughter Eun-seol is the sole surviving witness. On that same night, Choi Mu-gak (Park Yoo-chun) is at the hospital visiting his younger sister, also named Choi Eun-seol (Kim So-hyun), who's being treated for mild injuries after a bus accident. But when he returns to her bed, he finds her dead with her throat slit. Six months later, Eun-seol comes out of her coma. But she has no memories at all of her life before waking up at the hospital, and her left eye has turned green with no scientific explanation. She has also gained the unique ability to "see" smells as visible colors and shapes, and can even trace where people have been because their lingering scents are like a trail. To protect her, Jae-pyo adopts her and invents a new life for her, telling her that he's her real father and that her name is Oh Cho-rim. Another six months pass, and Cho-rim is a cheerful girl who's adjusted to her ability. She dreams of a becoming a comedian, and works as a gopher for a small, struggling theater company called Frog Troupe. On the other hand, Mu-gak had been so traumatized by his sister's death that after two months of no sleep and constant pain, he'd fainted and was clinically dead for ten days. When he woke up, he'd lost the sense of smell and taste, and is unable to feel pain. And unlike his previous warm personality, Mu-gak is now stoic, emotionless, and speaks in a monotone. He leaves his job at the aquarium to become a police officer, vowing to reopen the case and catch the killer. But to do so, he must first get promoted to detective, and has to prove himself to the head of the homicide unit Detective Kang Hyuk (Lee Won-jong) in ten days or else never ask for a promotion again. Cho-rim also needs a skit partner for her upcoming audition in ten days, and when she offers to help him with his cases in exchange, they decide to team up. After a model (Park Han-byul) turns up dead, seemingly another victim of the Barcode serial killer, Mu-gak joins the investigation headed by Lieutenant Yeom Mi (Yoon Jin-seo), and he hones in on two possible suspects: the model's boyfriend, chef Kwon Jae-hee (Nam-goong Min) and her doctor (Song Jong-ho).
Choi Mu-gak (Park Yoo-chun) No surprise here, I love Micky Yoo-chun. Ever since I saw him in Rooftop Prince first, I fell for his amazing acting. His acting is even more impressive in this drama, he got to express more emotion towards losing his sister and only family. He is a really comedic character which I absolutely love because he played a funny character in Rooftop Prince too. He can be extremely serious and passionate. He is so adorable and makes you fall for his character so fast. I love the concept that he can't feel pain or taste food because it gives him a reason to have character development. He wants revenge for his sisters death and wishes to find and kill the murder but once he has the chance, he doesn't have the heart to kill him. But he says he can't murder anyone and that shows he has a soul unlike the bad guy. He starts to develop feelings for the female lead and begins to be able to feel pain and taste food again.
Two Murder Suspects:
Chef Kwon Jae-hee (Nam-goong Min) isn't suspicious at all from the beginning but once I saw that he visits the doctor all the time. It makes us wonder, what his relationship is with him... He has such a sweet smile and he's so nice to everyone, but you ever know what is hidden within him. Doctor Baek Chun Kyung (Song Jong-ho) was the one I was weary about since the first time I saw him and that's because he's a doctor and a doctor walked past Mu-Gak in the hospital when his sister's throat was slit. He always gives a creepy grin when I see him. Both of these guys were potential suspects for the Barcode Case because the killer had to be skillful with a knife and both use a scalpel and a knife. When I found out who the killer was, I was really shocked and didn't want to believe it and the other person was completely innocent...
Yes, it has a very unique storyline and it doesn't lead off from the plot. It builds on it. The fact that it's a mystery, thriller, comedy and romance drama. Says a lot. It has a lot going for it. I love the mystery in it all and keeps you guessing who the murder is. I love that the female lead has a unique power where she can see smells. It's interesting and different. She tries to help by using her power to find the killer that killed Ma-Guk's sister and her parents that she had no idea died. The character development is amazing and the actors are even more amazing. Park Yoo-Chun is perfect for this role and the murder was even more fit for his role because it was played out so well and so believable. This was the 1st drama I watched with Shin Se-kyung and she did a great job as well.
Choi Ma-Guk (Park Yoo-Chun) and Choi Eun-seol (Shin Se-kyung) This couple may not have had the best chemistry that I've seen but they are cute. They are a comedic couple that make you laugh when you see them together because Ma-Guk is always screaming Chuuuuurrrr!!! They always make each other laugh and together defeat the bad guys with the guy being a cop and the girl using her powers for clues. They are the ultimate team to bring justice to the world. Ma-Guk puts on the cutest smile when he's with Eun-seol and you can see his sincerity towards her. They are so adorable!
Honey by Acourve is such an upbeat and happy go lucky song that makes you want to nod your head and sway to the rhythm. I love it so much, it's so sweet and cute.
I loved the whole storyline, the mystery and the thrill of it all. Every episode left me curious and anxious. I couldn't stop watching, it's addictive. The actresses were amazing but the actors were even more amazing. The killer sold me with his acting, he was impressive. The music was good, except I wasn't really a fan of the music that kept playing whenever the murder came up on the screen. I really liked the storyline a lot. The main couple was super adorable, full of energy and bright. I love the special effects of the different smells that flew around that she smelled, it was cool. To be honest a lot of people loved "My Love From Another Star" but I wasn't a big fan of it all that much... (DONT HATE ME!!!) It wasn't that memorable to me and I watched that one more recently than this one but I still remember everything from this drama. I loved it a lot more than that drama. Sorry to all the "My Love From Another Star" fans. I don't hate that drama, its just not one of my favorites. This is definitely one drama that sticks out to me because of how different it is. I absolutely loved it!
9.5/10 - I would give it a perfect but, I wanted more chemistry between the main leads. Other than that I really loved this drama. If you love mystery, thriller, comedy and romance dramas. I fully recommend you check out "The Girl Who Sees Smells" also known as "Sensory Couple"!
Have you watched "The Girl Who Sees Smells", did you like it?
