The latest trailer for Sherlock Holmes: The Devil's Daughter finally shows us what the game is going to look like when it's being played. If you remember, I wrote a card about the cinematic trailer a couple months back because it interested me just enough to write about it. I think I'm sold on the game after watching the two videos I posted below.
Now, the 1-minute or so gameplay trailer above wasn't the thing that clinched my decision in buying the game when it comes out. But it still shows a bit of the game and how it looks. Now, I know, it looks pretty janky and weird at times. And it definitely looks like a game that was made by an indie studio.
None of these things are issues for me though because in my opinion the voice acting is fantastic. The world looks full instead of small and linear (although, I bet it's a pretty linear game). And even if it has the illusion of a vast world, I'll probably enjoy it.
Now the next video, which is B-Roll footage for the trailer, is what sold me.
Again, it's pretty janky looking. Some of the animations look stiff and weird and it makes me realize how spoiled I've been by games that build their cutscenes through motion capture. All of that stuff aside, I really enjoy the actual mechanics of the game.
When he's interviewing people, you can actually look at the details of the room or the person you're speaking to in order to make certain assumptions about the character you're talking to. And all of these things play a part in the dialogue you have with that character. The way this looks visually and the way it looks like it plays, makes me feel like Frogwares (the developer) really want the player to feel like Sherlock Holmes.
In the end, it looks like a pretty interesting adventure/mystery game and I don't come by those as often as I want to. Even though they seem like simple additions and some might say it'll get boring after a while, I feel like I'd be completely invested in the way the game works and whatever The Devil's Daughter thing means.
Sherlock Holmes: The Devil's Daughter will be available on June 10th, 2015
What do you guys think? Is this something you guys would be interested in playing?
