The Last Samurai starring Tom Cruise and Ken Watanabe was inspired by the Satsuma Rebellion led by a general named Saigo Takamori, who came to be known as the "true last samurai." Some interesting facts about the REAL last samurai: - He actually helped establish the government that brought about all those western changes to Japan (the Meiji Restoration) - He resigned from this new government because people didn't agree to his plan to start a war with Korea... - ...that involved him going to Korea, getting himself killed by angering Korean officials, giving an excuse for Japan to start a war. - He didn't wear the cool samurai armor during battle. He wore French-style military uniforms (see picture) - The rebels used guns and cannons instead of swords and arrows. - He died during battle, but no one knows how. His head was not attached to the body.
