Pretty long article by Fareed Zakaria on "The Rise of Illiberal Democracies" I really think this is especially pertinent today. In Egypt, we saw democracy without liberalism leading to a centralized regime, eroding liberty, ethnic competition, and conflict. The international community and the United States are typically so obsessed with the existence of voting that we miss the big picture. We fail to see the forest before the tress, and it comes back to bite us later. Check it out and let me know what you think.
