Repression Grows Worse in Russia
Russian authorities are using the police, courts, legislature, and media to silence dissent--for now and the foreseeable future. Authorities arrested the only nationally known opposition mayor on (likely) false charges of bribery, sought six years in prison for blogger Alexi Navalny, and continued to prosecute those who demonstrated against President Putin's inauguration. If that wasn't enough, Mr. Putin signed two separate laws discriminating against gay people. In one of which, gay rights demonstrations are now criminalized. In the other, gay couples are prohibited from adopting children.
