Feeling Like You're Stuck?: "Barely Legal" By The Strokes
"I just can't figure out nothing."
We all reach a point in our lives where we feel like we've been going in cricles. Maybe you've just lost your job, or your significant other and you feel as if you've just been moving laterally.
When you spend most of your time moving from side to side, you start to feel like you're missing out on all the things that people who move forward get to experience. Jealousy strikes, and you ask yourself...what did I put all of this work in for?
I was listening to my indie rock running playlist the other day while I was...of course, running and one of the songs struck me in an extremely different way than it usually does.
"Barely Legal" by The Strokes has often been overlooked as one of their best tracks. I never really paid much attention to it until it caught my ear the other day. It's really about feeling stuck, and trying to figure out what you want in life, or in the next 10 minutes. Decisions. Decisions.
It wasn't necessarily the beat of the song, which could be mistaken as uptempo and boppy to the uneducated listener, it was the lyrics.
"I didn't take no shortcuts
I spent the money that I saved up
Oh, Momma running out of luck
Like my sister, don't give a fuck
I wanna steal your innocence
To me, my life, it don't make sense
Those strange manners, I loved 'em so
"Why won't you wear your new trench coat?"
I should've worked much harder
I should've just not bothered
I never show up on weekdays
Something that you learned yesterday
"Drive you to work; you'll be on time
These little problems they're not yours and mine,"
"Come on and listen to what I say
I've got some secrets that'll make you stay"
I just want to turn you down
I just want to turn you around
Oh, you ain't never had nothin' I wanted, but...
I want it all
I just can't figure out...
Nothing
And all together it went well
We made pretend we were best friends
Then she said, "Oh, you're a freak"
"They ordered me to make mistakes"
Together again, like the beginning
It all works somehow in the end
How can you honestly not relate to that if you feel lie you're stuck? The line in particular, "I should have worked much harder / I should have just not bothered" makes a lot of sense. How would things be different if you just gave up...or gave in?
I guess it's not worth exploring, because people warn you about looking back too often and how dangerous that is. But it's comforting to know, that a song like this exists and tons of people identify with it.
