In my recent manga perusals, I stumbled across this new one-shot manga from Tomoya Hanada, called PutOn. I'm always down for some new manga if the art is appealing, so I decided to check it out.
The manga takes a new and unique if weird approach to shonen battle stereotypes. This is a ninja manga, though unlike Naruto, which bases it's ninjutsu stuff off of chakra, this manga highlights the power of the ninja through different means.... their clothes.
The one-shot is roughly 45 pages long or so, and it shows a team-up of two people tasked with bringing down a local crime boss. The heroine we are first introduced to is 'Button' and she is basically the regular trope of 'girl in over her head', though she gets paired with Kilt, The strongest expert fighter in the ranks of the organization Put-On.
I won't spoil any more than that, but I have to say I really enjoyed Kilt's character. He is first a bit of a dunce who seems to be on the verge of death, but the explanation for that comes across well and the way that his fighting style shines through is a pretty interesting spin on typical shonen hero stories.
I recommend this one-shot to anyone who's maybe in a rut and doesn't know what to read or watch for the moment. It's short, though I hope maybe it will be picked up for syndication later.
