Koreatown LA: Desserts, Desserts, & More Desserts!

One of my East Coast friends is flying to LA this summer and staying in Koreatown. Since I'm a San Diegan that sometimes heads up to LA on weekends, she asked me what to eat and where to go when visiting K-Town. Being that we've got a whole bunch of K-Entertainment fans on here, I figured it might be useful to list places for ALL of you - so if and when you're in California, you know where to visit to try some delicious food.

I figured I'd start off with a card dedicated to some of my all-time favorite Koreatown desserts!

Bingsu @ Cafe Heyri

755 S Hobart Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90005 There's plenty of places to get Korean-style shaved ice in Koreatown, but none of them have the variety of Cafe Heyri. There's traditional red bean (pat) bingsu, melon, green tea, coffee, chocolate, and - my personal favorite - seasonal fruit (pictured above)!

Macaron Ice Cream @ HAUS by Coffee Hunter

3826 W 6th St. Los Angeles, CA 90020 A growing trend in dessert cafes is the ice cream macaron - an ice cream sandwich made by layering ice cream between two very big macaron shells. Not only is HAUS' version my absolute favorite, but if you're a K-Pop fan, this cafe's got massive flat-screen TVs that play all your favorite music videos while you eat!

Bungeoppang @ Okrumong

3801 W 6th St. Los Angeles, CA 90020 Not only is Okrumong famous for its incredible take on traditional patbingsu, but it's also one of the few places in Koreatown where you can get a basket fresh bungeoppang - fish-shaped waffle-like breads filled with red bean - to share with friends!

Animal Donuts @ Fantastic Donuts

1101 S Vermont Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90006 You can read a little bit more about these adorable donuts here, but Fantastic Donuts has become pretty Instagram popular for their cute animal and character donut designs. (However, I'd definitely also recommend their cereal-topped ones. The Cinnamon Toast Crunch one almost tastes like a churro!)

Honeycomb Ice Cream @ Honeymee

3377 Wilshire Blvd. Suite 116, Los Angeles, CA 90010 I was telling my fellow So.Cal foodie @hmfong that I've never been able to check out Honeymee personally. Why? Because every time I'm in the neighborhood, there's a huge line of customers! How's that for a testament about how locals feel about this simply vanilla soft-serve topped with liquid honey and a generous REAL honeycomb on top?

Mochi Ice Cream @ Mikawaya

118 Japanese Village Plaza Mall, Los Angeles, CA 90012 So I'm cheating and throwing in a Little Tokyo wild card - Mikawaya! Chances are, if you've ever had store bought mochi ice cream, it was made by the Mikawaya company. But LA is the only place where you can visit its shop and order some pretty unique mochi ice cream flavors, including plum wine, black sesame, and mint chocolate chip!

So which one of these would you be down to try? Have any of you visited Koreatown and have other recommendations?

I've only been to LA koreatown a handful of times since I live in the bay area (too much driving), so I haven't had the chance to check out many places. My favorite place for shaved ice is called Sul and Beans. They also have this thing called ingeolmi toast which has rice cake inside (I think mine might've had condensed milk on it too). Honeymee is definitely worth the wait! It's a bit pricey for the amount that you get but it's so good!
@mrsjeon Let me know when you do!!
@danidee i've only been a couple times, but the wait hasn't been too bad! afters and cauldron tend to get packed (but tbh everything in diamond jamboree is always crowded, so not surprising afters is popular too).
@danidee it's planned to go back with my friend
isn't the fish filled with red bean paste just taiyaki? I mean it's delicious and all but i do get a bit miffed when the Koreans take ideas from the Japanese (it wouldn't be the first time). 😞

Pikachu Buns
I was in a baking mood and decided to try to make these! They came out good for my first time 😁😁 I'll post my recipes below if you'd like to try and make them. If you'd like the recipe, message me 😘 My bun recipe: -200g milk (Lukewarm) -5g active dry yeast -30g sugar --240g bread flour -60g all purpose flour -30g butter (room temp) -Egg wash Step 1: put lukewarm milk, sugar and yeast in a bowl. Whisk and set aside for 5min Step 2: in a separate bowl, combine bread flour and all purpose flour. Then add milk mixture. Add a pinch of salt and knead dough Step 3: after dough can take ball form, knead in the room temp butter. Knead until butter is fully incorporated. After incorporated, put in a lightly greased bowl cover with plastic wrap and set aside in a warm place for 30-40 min. Step 4: after 30-40 mins, take dough out. It should have doubled in size. Put flour on your finger and poke the middle of the dough. If it first bounce back, declare the air from dough and cut in 8 equal pieces. Form in to balls and set aside on a baking sheet for 10-15 mins. Make sure to cover with a lightly dampened cloth. Step 5: cut two areas on the doughball across from each other in a diagonal direction. Egg was the parts you cut in to. Sprinkle with sugar cover them again with a lightly dampened cloth and let them rest for 30 mins - an hour. They will double in size again Step 6: bake in an oven preheated to 400° for 10-12 mins and you're done! Chocolate pudding filling: -2 egg yolks -2 1/2 tbsp sugar -1 tbsp all purpose flour -1 1/2 tbsp corn starch -1 tbsp coco powder -200ml milk (hot) -2 tbsp butter -30g chocolate. I used four squares of semi sweet chocolate Step 1: whisk egg yolks and sugar together. In separate bowl, combine flour, corn starch and coco powder. Add mixture to yolk mixture and whisk together. Step 2: slowly add hot milk to the chocolate yolk mixture. When fully combined. Put yolk mixture through a strainer into a pot. Out put on burner and set to medium heat. Continuously whisk until mixture thickens to pudding consistency. Step 3: take off heat immediately and add butter and chocolate. Continue mixing until chocolate and butter mix in. Step 4: place plastic wrap directly on pudding and put in fridge to cool. After it cools, mix it again and add to piping bag.
Thursday Is Donut Day!
To celebrate the incredible progress of my plastic surgery journey, which you can read all about here, I decided to call a couple friends of mine to join me for donuts this morning. WHY? Because LA donuts from random mom and pop shops are the best, and can turn any post-op rhinoplasty into something called bliss! @Butterflyblu knows all about these dreamy eats in and around LA. This time, however, I wanted to venture out to a different donut shop. One that I'd never been too. And this is what happened: Kettle Glazed! Coming from the Valley, take the 101 S. to Vine street and go East, which turns into Franklin. Just passed Argyle. If you hit Gower, you've gone too far! Turn around! I know, parking is hit or miss, but if you have to park further than you like, imagine all the calories you'll be burning, which will make diving into these nuggets of sweet heaven all the more decadent! Their Cronut is A REVELATION OF ALL THAT IS RIGHT AND GOOD. Don't skip this!!!!!!! I think this is my new hotspot for donuts. For realz. If you live in LA, and you've never been here before--VINGLE ME! LET'S GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Would you ladies care to join me for some donuts here sometime?! :) it's not a date, just a time to chill... @jordanhamilton @kaminisingh @alywoah @TessStevens @ChelseaHeyes @QueenYuki @KyotieWolf @kristenadams @Donnas @stargaze @flymetothemoon @ImUrBestFriend @galinda @Bekka @RaquelArredondo @jazziejazz @rmayra1 @prgurl4u2envy @DemiP @alannasofia @danidee @daniachicago @simplysam12 @TAIJIOTTER

Korean Winter Street Foods
Korea is proud of its food, but it REALLY proud of its street food. There are different foods depending on the season, and I have to say that winter is the best. Here's a list of foods you MUST TRY if you get the chance: 군고구마 (kun go-gu-ma) 군 means "roasted" and 고구마 is Korean sweet potato. The potato is roasted in a huge barrel oven, then handed to you with the skin still on. It's your job to peel it and eat the sweet goodness inside. You can buy an entire bag if you want! 호떡 (ho-ddeok) 호떡 is sort of a pancake/donut combination. It is fried dough filled with cinnamon, sugar, and occasionally nuts. It is flattened into a pancake shape and handed to you in a tiny paper cup. Be careful with the first bite because the inside are often boiling hot! (There are also vegetable versions but the dessert version is much better in my opinion!) 군밤 (kun bam) We just learned that 군 means roasted and now we learn another word: 밤 means chestnut! Just like in New York where there are roasted nut stands everywhere around Christmas time, the cold weather brings out the roasted chestnut vendors. 계란빵 (kye-ran bbang) 계란 means egg while 빵 means bread so voila! Egg bread! The bread part is similar to corn bread, but a little less corn-y and the egg is steamed on top to make a really, really delicious combo. It's my favorite street food after 군고구마 :D 호두과자 (ho-du kwa-ja) The small of this is unnnnbelievable! 호두 means walnut and 과자 means cookie or snack. Therefore 호두과자 is a walnut cookie! They are shaped like walnuts and filled with sweet red bean. You can buy these by the bag full too! 회오리감자 (hwae-o-ri kam-ja) LOOK AT THESE THINGS! They are called 회오리감자 because 회오리 means tornado and 감자 means potato. Behold the potato tornado! I have NO idea how you eat these :) Have you guys tried any of these? The Christmas Latte to Rule Them All
I've talked about this cafe before, and I'll talk about it again. All That Sweets is hands down my favorite dessert cafe on Earth. Watch my video review here or read below^^ Today I went alone so I passed on a slice of the strawberry shortcake but look how adorable is it! Their cakes are always light and creamy, though the flavors change daily! I've seen chocolate, vanilla, and even kiwi cakes. Instead I opted for one of their amazing macarons. Because I came late in the day, my only option was the chocolate raspberry "merry xmas" heart macaron, but I probably would have chosen that anyway. These flavors also vary with the season but every single one I've ever tried has been absolutely delicious. But of course, the star of the show is my Christmas Tree Latte <3 Their lattes are amazingly intricate, and they have a dozen of them on the menu at all times. The homemade (delicious) whipped cream is covered in melted chocolate, sprinkles, and meringue cookies. I seriously thought I hated meringue until I tried these babies. Now I can't get enough! They sell these for the month of December, and then usually move on to make snowflake or other winter themed lattes. All year 'round they offer rose, raincloud, and even coral styled lattes! This year they also introduced a gingerbread man latte that I was tempted to get, but I had to stick to my traditional tree :) You can also find me here: Tumblr Instagram Twitter Facebook SnapChat: cari.cakez
