It's a regular favorite in crime novels, tv-series, etc: Someone's been murdered, witnesses and DNA analyses have pointed to a suspect, and the police are about to lock him away when they find out that the suspect as an identical twin... DOGS CAN DIFFERENTIATE THE SCENTS OF IDENTICAL TWINS, according to the study noted below. Apparently, dogs got it right 100% in this test! I don't know how wide-spread this practice is yet, but it sounds like a method worth trying out seriously, especially given the high cost of detailed DNA analysis. These are the standard methods that the police uses: 1. although DNA is nearly identical, fingerprints are distinct 2. other non-genetic distinctive features, such as tattoos, scars, and accents 3. check on the alibis of each sibling Also, the DNA between identical twins is not exactly the same. "Epigenetic markers" are distinctive, even among identical twins. These markers, however, are not always well-preserved, especially in semen which play a key role in identifying criminals in rape cases. Wow I had no idea fingerprints were based on environment. I guess you always see criminals cut em off in movies and stuff.
@JohnLee well, they COULD be the answer, but nothing sure yet I think. @curtisb fingerprints are different because they are affected by environment as well as genetics. DNA is also slightly different, as DNA undergoes constant mutation (almost all cancer is caused by DNA mutation)
i didn't know the fingerprints were different. How? If DNA is identical?
