미역국 (Seaweed soup)
1.For women who have just given birth
미역국 is a Korean soup made from the seaweed.
It is typically consumed by women after giving birth as it contains a high level of calcium important for nursing mothers.
2. For birthday
Koreans almost always eat 미역국 on the morning of their birthday.
Interestingly, Koreans ask “Did you have seaweed soup?” for the birthday greeting on someone’s birthday.
3. For the day of the exam
Korean would not eat this soup on the day of the exam because seaweed is slippery and gives the idea of failing.
Thus Koreans say “I had seaweed soup!” when they fail the exam.
