When was candy corn invented? (and other random facts about it)
Candy corn was invented in the 1880's by George Renninger and the Wunderle Candy Company in Philadelphia, PA.
Currently, the oldest candy corn manufacturer in the US is Goelitz Confectionery Company (now Jelly Belly Company) in Cincinnati, Ohio. It started manufacturing in 1898.
It was an instant success, especially among the rural community (i.e. farmers) - so successful that the company made other varieties that don't exist today, such as the candy turnips :@
Candy corn was the only thing kept Goelitz Company alive during the tough years of the Great Depression and the "sugar crisis" of 1970.
Some other varieties of the candy corn:
Reindeer corn for Christmas (red, green, and white)
Indian corn (it's chocolate and vanilla flavored)
Cupid corn for Valentine's Day (red, pink, and white)
Bunny corn for Easter (pastel-colored)
And then there is the candy pumpkin :P (pic 4)
