Wanna start from the beginning? part 1
Missed the last chapter? part 6
Plummeting down I pushed my hands out to my sides. I felt for a wall. There was no wall. It was just like my dream where I was falling and there was no wall to stop me. I started freaking out once again. There was no way that I could get out of this mess.
I didn’t want to be here anymore. I looked up and saw the hole I fell through was really small. I was too far down for anyone to hear me. I looked below me; it was black for however long it went down. I was scared, and I didn’t know why I went down here anyway.
I was falling so fast, that any moment I could hit the ground and get hurt. Or worse I could die… I frantically moved around for any type of cliff, ledge, or anything to grab. I moved my arms in front and behind me. Nothing.
There was no way of getting out or getting down. I just fell. I fell faster and faster. I took a chance in looking down. Below me was a distant light. A red color. I wanted to see what it was, but how was I going to stop myself? I got closer and closer. Every few seconds I would look down, the red light was no longer a light. It was a glow. A very bright red glow.
I was just above the glow. Before I could get to the glow there was a small tiny hole that I had to go through. However, before that tiny hole were rocks. The walls began to narrow. I had to stop myself before I totally crashed. I ran my hands down the sides of the walls. I put my feet out to stop myself. I worked every muscle I had.
I finally came to a stop just before hitting the ground. I jumped down on solid rock. There were all kinds of pointy stalagmites all around me. I had to walk all around them. I walked straight up to the tiny hole. From far away the hole was tiny. And close up it was only a little bigger. I could fit about half my body through that hole. I had to find something to break it.
I walked back and forth thinking of ways to get through that small hole. One idea came to me. I ran to the hole and jumped on it. Just a little bit of rock cracked off. Another idea was I reached my arm through. I put my arm through the whole and I got to about my shoulder. If I could fit my head and other arm through then I could get in. I pulled back out and tried chipping off the rim of the weird circular hole. It wasn’t easy, but the rock started chipping after a while. I could only get little pieces.
I tried putting my arm in again to see if that would help. It got stuck. I tried and tried to pull my arm out. It didn’t work. I pushed my arm back in the hole and got it stuck even more. I saw that there were cracks around the edge. I pushed more of my arm in and the cracks grew. I used my other hand and pulled at the cracks. They broke away with ease. I figured out a way to get in.
It was a very slow process. I had no way of telling what time it was down here either. The hole was big enough to stick my head in it. When I did I looked down I saw that the red glow was the flower. I had to get to it. I pulled my head out and used all my arm muscle to break the rock. It took some time but I managed. I got enough rock to break and I pulled my body through.
Underneath was a rock ceiling. It was like I was under a volcano. It was so cool. I looked around for the flower. There it was in the middle of the room. I started walking to it when it flashed a bright red. The room around me lit up with color. I saw what I was about to walk into.
I was in a volcano! I almost walked into hot lava. Around the lava was a path way. It looked like a maze made of rock. I had to go through it before I could even get to the flower. Since I was above ground level on a higher rock I saw which way to get through the maze. The only problem with that was that I couldn’t ever remember which way I should and shouldn’t go.
I took a good look, and jumped from the rock and went to the entrance of the maze. I walked through the gate and made a left right away. I could figure this out. All I needed was time. I followed the path and I came to an intersection. I had to choose from left or right. I chose left again. If I took all lefts that would lead me to where I needed to be. I remembered that from looking up above.
Following the left path I came to a stop. Something was following me, I could feel it. I turned around ever so slowly. There behind me was the strangest thing I ever saw. A giant praying mantis. It was moving its arms up and down making a weird noise. All six legs moved towards me. I turned my back on the creature and ran. I ran so fast that nothing could stop me.
Except a wall. I ran down a wrong path. How could I have gone down the wrong path? I took a glimpse behind me; the creature was no where in sight. If I could just walk out and retrace my steps everything should be fine. I walked the path to the very end where two other paths met. Whichever path I choose would be crucial to me. I could stick with taking a left, but I probably came that way. Instead I went right.
Nothing was around me. Except two solid walls and a cement path. I kept walking looking in front of me and behind me. I didn’t need that creature following me. I finally came to a cross road. The paths split in front of me and made a tunnel. I don’t know which one to go through. I sat down in front of both tunnels and listened.
I wasn’t listening for anything in particular just to what I thought would be the right path. I cleared my mind of everything, but the flower. That’s was all that I needed to think about. I pictured the flower in my head. What its leaves and the flower looked like. I sat there for the longest time just getting my mind on the flower.
I got up and opened my eyes. I looked down both paths. Then started walking down the path that was on my right. This was the path that I was supposed to take. It was dark in front of me, but light shined behind me. I kept walking not caring that it got dark. Soon enough it was pitch black. I didn’t turn back or freak out.
In front of me a light transformed. As I got closer it got brighter and brighter. I broke from the tunnel into the light. There in the center of the room was the flower. It was right there in front of me again! Around the flower was what looked like lava. It was a moving red liquid.
I looked around for any way of getting to it. I could go in the water. To test that out I found a rock and dropped it in the red liquid. When the rock hit the red liquid it began to burn and disintegrate.
Well that idea went out the door. I couldn’t swim across. How was I going to get across? I sat down by the edge and began to think. There must be a way across, otherwise I went down this hole for no reason. I began tapping my foot making a tap, tap, tap noise. The floor began to shake. I looked around at the ceiling, I was in a big dome. There was a path around the flower, which made the flower a little island. It looked kind of cute. I stood up and leaned against the wall.
I began tapping my foot again. The floor began to shake a little again. I looked down at my foot and how just a little tapping was shaking the floor. I made a big stomp and the floor cracked. The crack went to edge. I jumped again and the crack spread from the edge to all around the dome. Nothing affected the little island that the flower was on.
I walked around the circle stomping. Each stomp made a little crack. I got back to where I started and made the last stomp. With that last stomp the floor cracked completely and started separating. I ran back to the entrance and stood there. The dome and the floor fell apart. Large pieces of rock fell everywhere. I had to turn around and block myself from the smoke that arose from falling rock.
When the rocks stopped falling I turned back around and looked at what I had done. There was no longer a floor. All that was left was a floating island, and a lot of rock steps. The red liquid was gone. All that surrounded me was black. The ceiling was gone, noting but a black opening. I looked for a step that I could step on. The closest one was a jump away. I knew I could make it because I had made those big steps at the cave.
I backed up ever so slightly and ran to the edge. I jumped to the first step and almost missed it. Luckily I grabbed it in time before I fell. I stood up and walked to the next step. This step was only a foot away from the first step. I stood on the second step and looked around me for how far away I was from the island.
There were millions of steps around me. Many of them were really tiny steps. I jumped from step to step. Each step was a step closer, but it felt like a million steps away.
I was on my last few steps when I heard something running down the tunnel behind me. I turned around and waited to see what was coming up behind me. When I looked I saw two floating green legs appear, then came the other six legs. It was the praying mantis that chased me before.
I was frozen on the step. The praying mantis started making this clicking noise. Then it moved forward onto the rock steps. Not all its feet could fit on one step. Most of its feet were on more than one step. I started panicking. It was finally coming back for me, even though I lost it before.
As it came closer I started hatching a plan as to how I could get ride of it. When I came up with a sort-of plan the praying mantis was right in front of me. It reached for me and just about got me, but I screamed. That seemed to scare it a bit. It jumped backward and almost fell off the rock step. That’s what I could do. I had the best idea, and it involved knocking the mantis off the rocks. I turned around started jumping to the next rock. I would have to divert from the flower right now. I kept jumping from step to step, and the praying mantis followed me.
As I went from one rock to another I picked up tiny rock steps. I stopped jumping and waited for the praying mantis to catch up. When he was in front of me, I threw the rock. It hit in the head and he stumbled back. Some of his feet fell off the rock.
The rocks that he fell from fell down into the pitch black. If I hit the rocks that he stood on I could make him fall completely. I grabbed rocks from all around me. Out of the corner of my eye I saw that the praying mantis was trying to balance itself. I didn’t wait for it come to me again I just threw the rock I was holding in my hand. I missed the rock he was standing on, but I hit one of his feet instead. The foot slipped and I threw another rock at another foot of his. That foot slipped too. Again and again I kept hitting his feet until he had just two feet on the rock. He continued to make that clicking noise.
I didn’t waste any time. I reached for another rock, and I felt none. I looked down and saw that I was no where near any tiny rocks. The closets ones were in front of the praying mantis. I jumped down to the step in front of the mantis. It reached for me again and again. Each time he would wobble back and forth.
I picked up two rocks, one for him and another if I missed. I looked at him and said, “This is for trying to eat me, you jerk.”
With that said I threw the rock the best I could and knocked him off the rock step. I watched as he fell down the blackness. He got smaller and smaller until he was gone.
When I looked up I didn’t know that I was standing in front of the tunnel again. I had gone around the entire circle. I also didn’t know that there in front of the tunnel was Hongbin. His eyes were wide as possible and he was just staring at me.
We stood there for a while. Neither of us said anything. I couldn’t take it any longer. I turned around and jumped back on to the path I was taking. Each jump I said, “Why are you here?” Never getting a single reply.
I reached the island the flower was on. Climbing on I heard a faint, “I don’t know.”
I turned around and just looked at him. I didn’t bother saying anything, I just pointed at the flower. I walked up to the flower and, before anything else that was bad could happen, picked it.
I jumped back down to the entrance of the tunnel. When I got there I looked at Hongbin and said as simply as I could, “Stop following me.” then I walked away.
I knew that I left him in that field all by himself. And I knew that I came crying to him because I had lost the flower. But now I had found it, all by myself. I had no help. I defeated whatever got in my way.
As I walked the tunnel I didn’t look back at all. I knew that if I did he would come running to me. When I emerged from the tunnel every wall around me began to crumble.
The walls crumbling didn’t faze me whatsoever. It felt like I was walking away from a crime scene. Nothing got in my path. I made my way out of the maze and under the arch I came through. I climbed my way back up the rock I jumped down. I turned around to watch everything collapse. Then I saw him. There in the maze Hongbin was still finding his way out. I guess I would have to waited for him to get out.
I waited for a while, with the walls and such still crumbling around me. When he finally got out I waited for him to climb up the rock.
“Well that took you long enough.” I said tapping my foot, then stopped. The last time I tapped my foot I cracked a whole floor.
“Yeah well you were like flying.” He said. I turned around and looked up. The hole I fell through was above my head. There was no way of getting back through it.
I looked at him, “How did you get down here?” I said.
“Oh now you want to talk to me?” he said.
“Look around you.” I said moving my hand behind him, “Do you think I have time to figure out how you got down here?”
He crossed his arms, “I jumped down.”
“No way?” I said.
“Yeah and let me guess, you need help getting back up?” he said.
The crumbling had reached us. There was no way to get out. I was about to say a smart comment back at him when he pushed me away from him screaming, “Look out!”
I slammed into rock and watched as the ceiling came down. It landed on top of Hongbin. He had pushed me out of the way so that I wouldn’t get hurt. I hated when he did that, acting all heroic and shit. When the rock was done falling I ran to the pile of rock on top of him. I started pulling rock away.
There underneath all the rock was Hongbin all crumpled and bruised, shirt ripped and blood dripping from his head, “Hongbin!” I shouted, “Can you hear me!” I kept shouting hopping he would hear me. “Hongbin!” I shouted again. I kept digging.
I got his body all dug up and sat him up, “Hongbin, are you all right?” I had tears running down my face. I couldn’t handle it if he died. I felt his hand reach up and cup my face. I looked down at him and saw him staring at me. I just hugged him closer.
"Stop being so damn heroic all the time." I hugged him tighter until he patted my back mouthing he couldn't breathe.
After some time I got him to stand and we walked up the rubble that the ceiling made. That took time itself to get up the rubble. When were up in the space I sat Hongbin down and walked around. The stalagmites were everywhere. I walked around them looking up. Again I thought of a way to get out. But there was no way of getting out. The drop was too high.
I walked back over to Hongbin, “How did you get down here?” I sat down next to him, “The only way I got down was falling. How did you get down?”
“I climbed down.” He sat and rubbed at his arm. I looked at his arm, it was cut kind of deep. I ripped my top shirt and tied it around his arm.
“How did you climb down?” I said finishing tying my shirt around his arm.
“I ran into everyone else.”
“You found them?” I said standing up.
“Yeah I found them. Well more like they found me.”
I started spinning around with my hands on my head, “This whole time they have been with you.”
“They still are.” He said, “They’re up there.” He said pointing up the drop.
“They are?” I said
“Yeah. We made a plan that all you had to do was pull on that string over there and Mang will fly down and get us.”
I looked at the wall and found the string he was talking about, “Do I pull on like this?” I pulled down on it.
“Yeah that’s all you do.”
“So how did you climb down here?” I went and sat down by him again.
“We made a ladder.”
“Out of what?”
“Out of tree braches and a type of wire-y string.”
“Is that what that string is made out of?”
“Yup.” He said smiling.
Then I heard flapping. Mang! I stood up and looked up, and saw him come down. When he landed I ran to him and gave him a really big hug.
“Oh Mang! I’ve missed you!” I said hugging him. I felt him chuckle.
“Oh little one.” He said, “We have all missed you too.”
I pulled away from him. And walked over to Hongbin “He got hurt.” I said. My voice sounded flat. Almost like every time I talked about Hongbin I didn’t care, “And I found the flower!” I said happily.
“That’s good.” He said, “Now we need to go because by the looks of it this place might collapse any moment.” I nodded.
We both walked over to Hongbin, “ Now I need you to stand up son.”
He started to stand up but was too weak, “Here let me help you.” I said. I walked over and helped him up. Mang leaned down so I could help him climb up. I walked Hongbin over to Mang and helped him climb up. When he got on I climbed on up and behind him.
“Alright Mang. We can go now.” I said.
Mang flapped his wings and we were off. Up in the air we went. I looked down and saw that the floor was slowly crumbling. As we got higher and higher the floor below us became no more. As I watched the walls became one big pile of rocks. When we broke through the top there was Mrs. Lee and Hyuk. I smiled at them and then looked back down, “Uh Mang we need to go this whole place is going to collapse.” He looked down and nodded. He flew up and grabbed Mrs. Lee and Hyuk by the shirt and flew off.
Behind us the crevasse burst and rocks flew everywhere. I watched as we flew out of the cave. We didn’t bother going down the steps. Mang flew us right threw the waterfall. It felt like an action movie. As we burst through the waterfall rocks flew past us in slow motion.
When all was said and done we found ourselves in the one spot I didn’t want to be. The meadow. Mang sat us down there and we walked back to the campsite that Hongbin and I had originally built. There we laid Hongbin down and Mrs. Lee looked at his arm and wiped the blood from his face.
I walked back to field and sat down in the grass. I pulled the flower out of my pocket and looked at it. The flower was all crumpled. I must have squished it in my pocket. I examined it carefully. It was a pretty pink color. It almost looked like a pink Lilly flower. Maybe that’s why they called it the Milly flower. As I looked at the flower it lit up in a yellow light.
I held out my hand and placed it there. As I watched the yellow light I saw the flower transform into a tiny gem. When it stopped glowing I looked at the gem. The gem seemed like a type of candy. Like a hard candy that you could suck on. I was tempted to try it out when I heard a noise.
I looked up to find a very rough up looking Hongbin. I almost laughed, but I didn’t.
“What were you about to eat?” he asked sitting down by me.
“Oh this?” I said and showed him, “It’s just the flower.” I said.
“THE flower, the one that you have been looking for?” he asked.
“Yeah. That one.” I said looking at it, “I was just sitting here looking at it when it turned into a gem, see.” I said and gave it to him.
“That’s so weird.” He said and gave it back.
“I know.” We sat there looking at the sky. I never noticed that it was almost dark out, “How long was I down there?” I asked turning to look at him?
“You were down there for at least a day.” He said and looked at me, “When were down there together, that was about half a day.”
“Oh my gosh. I was down there that long.” I said and looked down at my feet in front of me, “I’m sorry I left you here by yourself.” I said.
“Ha!” he said, I looked at him again.
“What?”
“I was fine, silly. I was able to find everyone else anyway.” He looked up to the sky again, “Besides, I would have let you go if you told me you didn’t want me to go with you.”
“You would have?”
“Yes. I’m not your dad.” He said lightly punching my arm.
“Oh, haha right..." I lay down in the grass and watch the sky change colors, from orange to red to green to purple, to finally blue. Just watching the sky change I began to fall asleep. I felt Hongbin push some of my hair aside on my face. He leaned closer to my ear and whispered, "Don't ever just leave like that. I was scared something bad would happen to you. I couldn't live with myself if I found you dead." He kissed the top of my head and laid down beside me.
This entire day I learned a few things. One of them was that I am strong by myself. I can do anything really if I put my mind to it. The other thing was that Hongbin really did care about me. He came and found me, even when I didn’t want him to. He even risked his own life for mine that I didn’t deserve. The last thing I was still confused about. Was that him confessing to me? Were the tears I shed when I couldn't hear him under the pile of rocks me confessing to him?
I drifted to sleep with the remaining thought, did I love Hongbin? And if I did, did he love me?
