Putting the Khmer Rouge on Trial in Cambodia
The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) is a special tribunal to bring the leaders of the Khmer Rouge to justice. The Khmer Rouge are responsible for the 1975-1979 genocide that slaughtered 2 million Cambodians. The ECCC is not trying to prosecute the unbelievable volume of documented crimes, the court only wants to try the highest profile cases. Just two defendants remain in custody and only one individual has been convicted. I have attached a pictures that I took when I went to the Killing Fields and outside of Phnom Penh, one of the most somber and moving places I have ever experienced.
