Senior Al Qaeda officials have escaped from Abu Ghraib prison after a coordinated assault. Gunmen attacked guards with mortars and RPGs while blasting their way into the compound. Other militants fought off security reinforcements sent from Baghdad. The number of escapees has reached 500, most of them were senior members of Al Qaeda who had received death sentences. Sunni insurgents in Iraq have been gaining strength in recent months and striking Shiite Muslims on a daily basis This has raised fears about a full blown war in a country without a stable power sharing system. 600 people have been killed in militant attacks this month in Iraq.
