Salad dressing can be one of the unhealthiest things you can eat. Many of the restaurant and bottled dressings are loaded with hydrogenated oils, sugar, artificial flavors, preservatives, fat and calories. All of which can seriously ruin your fresh greens and veggies. Take a look at six simple and easy things you can do to make your salads healthier:
1- Make Your Own Cherry Vinaigrette
1/8 cup sherry vinegar
1 tablespoon Amarena Cherry Mosto Cotto (cherry juice syrup or use fresh cherry juice concentrated)
3/8 cup olive oil
Pinch of salt
1/4 teaspoon dry mustard
1/2 teaspoon dry thyme
Put all the ingredients into the salad dressing shaker.
2- Squeeze an Orange
Simply squeeze a fresh orange or red grapefruit over your salad. This gives it just enough flavor while preventing your salad from tasting dry. For an added touch of sweetness, drizzle a little honey over your greens first.
3- Use Yogurt!
Have you ever thought about using low-fat yogurt for a salad dressing? It's creamy, flavorful and healthy. Here's a really great one to try:
1 clove garlic
2 heaped tablespoons natural Greek yogurt
Handful basil leaves
Juice ½ lemon
1 tablespoon apple cider or red wine vinegar
5 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1 teaspoon sea salt
2 tablespoons water
Mix together and shake.
4- Get Your Basil On
This one looks perfect for the summer. It's called a Meyer Lemon-Basil dressing:
1 cup Meyer lemon juice
2 tablespoons orange juice
2 tablespoons finely minced shallots
1 teaspoon minced, fresh garlic
2 teaspoons minced, fresh ginger
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1-1/2 tablespoons honey
3/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
1 cup loosely packed, fresh basil leaves
Freshly ground black pepper to taste
Blend all ingredients together and shake well.
5- Go For The Green
Give this one a try:
1 avocado, skin removed and pitted
3 Tablespoons apple cider vinegar
1/3 cup water
1 1/2 teaspoons lemon juice
1 clove garlic, minced
1/4 cup fresh parsley
10 basil leaves
1 small sprig of mint
