Deadman Wonderland

Genres: Action, Horror

Synopsis:

It looked like it would be a normal day for Ganta Igarashi and his classmates—they were preparing to go on a class field trip to a certain prison amusement park called Deadman Wonderland, where the convicts perform dangerous acts for the onlookers' amusement. However, Ganta's life is quickly turned upside down when his whole class gets massacred by a mysterious man in red. Framed for the incident and sentenced to death, Ganta is sent to the very jail he was supposed to visit.
But Ganta's nightmare is only just beginning.
The young protagonist is thrown into a world of sadistic inmates and enigmatic powers, to live in constant fear of the lethal collar placed around his neck that is slowed only by winning in the prison's deathly games. Ganta must bet his life to survive in a ruthless place where it isn't always easy to tell friend from foe, all while trying to find the mysterious "Red Man" and clear his name, in Deadman Wonderland.

This anime was super cool (up until the end at least; it was really going somewhere, but, sadly, it didn't get a season 2, so they just kinda hastily tried to wrap it up). I thought the concept was really dark and interesting, an amusement park prison where the prisoners are the attractions. This is one of my top manga must-reads because of how the anime was kinda left! Even though the ending was disappointing, I highly recommend this anime!

Honorable Mentions

Surprisingly, I don't think I've seen very many sci-fi anime, since I love the genre in general, at least in other media! So come on, give me your suggestions!

Cowboy Bebop

Genres:
Action, Adventure, Comedy, Drama, Space
Synopsis:
In the year 2071, humanity has colonized several of the planets and moons of the solar system leaving the now uninhabitable surface of planet Earth behind. The Inter Solar System Police attempts to keep peace in the galaxy, aided in part by outlaw bounty hunters, referred to as "Cowboys". The ragtag team aboard the spaceship Bebop are two such individuals.
Mellow and carefree Spike Spiegel is balanced by his boisterous, pragmatic partner Jet Black as the pair makes a living chasing bounties and collecting rewards. Thrown off course by the addition of new members that they meet in their travels—Ein, a genetically engineered, highly intelligent Welsh Corgi; femme fatale Faye Valentine, an enigmatic trickster with memory loss; and the strange computer whiz kid Edward Wong—the crew embarks on thrilling adventures that unravel each member's dark and mysterious past little by little.
Well-balanced with high density action and light-hearted comedy, Cowboy Bebop is a space Western classic and an homage to the smooth and improvised music it is named after.

I need to rewatch this one! I think I was kinda distracted the first time, so I don't remember much, just that it left a good impression! I've been meaning to plan a watch party for it on here, but I've just been so busy, I haven't gotten the chance!

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagaan

Genres: Action, Adventure, Comedy
Synopsis:
Simon and Kamina were born and raised in a deep, underground village, hidden from the fabled surface. Kamina is a free-spirited loose cannon bent on making a name for himself, while Simon is a timid young boy with no real aspirations. One day while excavating the earth, Simon stumbles upon a mysterious object that turns out to be the ignition key to an ancient artifact of war, which the duo dubs Lagann. Using their new weapon, Simon and Kamina fend off a surprise attack from the surface with the help of Yoko Littner, a hot-blooded redhead wielding a massive gun who wanders the world above.
In the aftermath of the battle, the sky is now in plain view, prompting Simon and Kamina to set off on a journey alongside Yoko to explore the wastelands of the surface. Soon, they join the fight against the "Beastmen," humanoid creatures that terrorize the remnants of humanity in powerful robots called "Gunmen." Although they face some challenges and setbacks, the trio bravely fights these new enemies alongside other survivors to reclaim the surface, while slowly unraveling a galaxy-sized mystery.

I saw this on Netflix and thought it looked interesting. I love the Trigger animation style and the emotional ride this anime took me on, not to mention the awesome characters!

Psycho-Pass

Genres: Action, Police, Psychological
Taking place about 100 years in our future, Japan is run by the Sybil System, a system which determines the careers of the citizens and monitors their mental states to stop crime before it happens. It sounds like a good idea, but the system may not be as perfect as it seems.
I think it's a really cool concept, and it's got a lot of fascinating characters, particularly the villain, Shogo Makishima, and old-fashioned intellectual whose psycho-pass is not recognized by the Sybil System and who believes that people only have real value when they act according to their own will.
As always, hope you enjoyed! So glad to see this catching on! If you wanna learn more about me/ be my friend/ be tagged in these, please don't hesitate to ask! I'm nice, I swear (mostly ;p)! Or I guess you can follow my 100 Days of Anime collection, or both if you feel so inclined!
Until next time! Please, feel free to share your thoughts/answers in the comments! I love discussion!
