100 Days of Anime, 72: Overrated Series

Sword Art Online

Believe me, I love watching SAO, but in hindsight, there are a lot of things that just aren't that great about it, plot-wise and such. Don't get me wrong, I love me some romance, but the whole romantic/harem subplot really kind of ruined it for me. I discussed that a lot in my NoTP card a few months ago (I ship Kirito x Asuna, of course, but I think they're extremely overrated as an anime couple, as I explained there). Then after *SPOILER* Kirito beat SAO, it kind of struggled to cling to that death game concept that drew me to the anime in the first place, but it seemed a bit forced in the GGO arc. I think they still found interesting things to do, but it kind of lost its way; it's not really cohesive anymore. I actually see mixed opinions about this anime, so I also think I could make a case for it being underrated, but I think I tend to fall on this side of the fence.

Honorable Mentions

This one is very difficult for me because "overrated" is kind of a touchy term, so please understand that I LOVE each and every one of these anime! They simply don't really live up to the hype for me, which in no way means that they are bad! The issue is more that they have been hyped to unattainable heights, which I actually think is a good thing because that means that a significant number of fans loved it enough to rave about it like that, even if it was just in the heat of the moment! Not sure if I'm making sense, but hopefully you get my drift, so please don't be offended! Additionally, it's been about 2 years since I've seen any of these, my early otaku days, so memory is probably also a factor, plus my tastes and sensibilities have changed over time, so the impressions I'm bagging this on are probably no longer valid; I've been meaning to revisit these. I also might think differently when I get around to the manga (working on Death Note, at the moment). Just saying, open mind, grain of salt!

Attack on Titan

I'm probably gonna get some flack for this one, but yeah, I think it's a little overrated. We all know how much this is hyped, especially when the anime was first coming out, and by no means is it bad, but it's honestly just kinda average good to me compared to my expectations. However, this is definitely one of which my opinion will be exponentially improved by rewatching it (which will happen shortly before season 2 finally gets here) and reading it, I suspect!

Black Butler

I don't think this one was hyped up quite as much as AoT, but my feelings are kind of similar. Sebastian's supermegafoxyawesomehot (TIME FOR ANOTHER GUESS THAT REFERENCE! Winner gets imaginary RedVines and all of my love and affection - or at least a lot of it!), and the plot for season 1 was interesting, but, like with SAO, it struggled a bit to stay alive in season 2. I'd actually heard that the manga stopped after season 1, but the anime kept going, and, due to it's popularity, the manga was picked back up. So it's understandably a bit rocky and awkward, and, apart from Sebby-san, I don't really think it's all that. (I plan to rewatch subbed and go on to Book of Circus, since I watched dubbed the first time - J Michael Tatum tho...)

Death Note

I'd heard a lot about Death Note from one of my best friends in high school who was always raving about it and showing me her fanart, so, naturally, it was one of the first anime I went for. It's also the only manga I've read so far (I'm about 80% through). Due to the nature of the story, I think this one is just more suited to manga than anime.
As always, hope you enjoyed! If you wanna learn more about me/ be my friend/ be tagged in these, please don't hesitate to ask! I'm nice, I swear (mostly ;p)! Or I guess you can follow my 100 Days of Anime collection, or both if you feel so inclined! Until next time! Please, feel free to share your thoughts/answers in the comments! I love discussion! @NikolasSatterwh but I did like what they did kind of switching gears with the potential medical applications. That was kinda fascinating to me. I think there's hope for it yet

@OtakuDemon10 I found it pretty interesting too, I hope they do more with that and show the benefits of virtual reality especially after the sword art online incident where everyone saw the negative side of it

SoA was the first anime I watched and it was okay but I didn't care for it enough once it changed to the fairies, Black Butler was the second anime that I watched and I liked it a whole lot more than SoA but I didn't even attempt to watch season 2. I'm reading Death Note as my first manga and watching the anime as I get further in the manga. But like you said I prefer the manga.
