Hun Sen is almost certain to hold onto power in Cambodia's election this sunday. The Prime Minister is Asia's longest serving elected leader, though many acknowledge irregularities in the electoral process. America's support for Cambodia's leading party has cooled, after renewed cooperation during the Bush years. Many think that this has to do with Myanmar, where President Obama has devoted considerable energy as part of his pivot to Asia. Because Myanmar (which borders India and China) is much more strategically important than Cambodia, The US is now less willing to put up with the CPP's human rights issues Unfortunately, there's no quick fix in Cambodia. When I was in Phnom Penh during the election last summer, I heard many several residents talk about the lack of any alternative to Hun Sen. Many also felt sure that the PM was certain to keep power.
