the sun never shines on closed doors......
I saw her there from afar  Her hair grey charcoal  Takes a drag from her tar  I kissed her a smile  But her blood red shot eye  Said the son never shines on closed doors  It's been eight long years since I saw  The woman who's labored  Since the day I was born  These wrinkles now face  To that cold dark damp place  Where the son never shines on closed doors  She said the son never shines on closed doors  I open to find only hurricanes blow  Take me away back to the green fields of May  Because the son never shines on closed doors  Death comes like a theif in the night  To steal while you sleep  The soul's flickering licght  Well maybe it's then  She said, I'll see you again  Because the son never shines on closed doors  She said the son never shines on closed doors  I open to find only hurricanes blow  Take me away back to the green fields of May  Because the son never shines on closed doors  And we all go the same way home  Yeah we all go the same way home "flogging molly"

Sooo, I'm not sure how close to 100% true the story is, but I've heard that the story behind this song is as follows: while Dave King was in "exile," he didn't see his mom for 8-9 years. She had a stroke during that time. Then, afterwards, he was able to go home, having attained his green card. The stroke had caused her to have significant memory loss, though. When he came home, he rang the doorbell and she answered the door, but she didn't recognize Dave, her own son. 😢 Thus leading to the lyrics of this song. Like I said, I'm not 100% sure of the validity of that story. A friend saw a documentary and recounted that story to me... My mom has early onset dementia. (She also happens to be of Irish descent.) I always think of her when I listen to this song. It makes me tear up. It's a beautiful song. 💜

@ButterflyBlu Dave King talked about an experience about flying back to Ireland to see his mother after 8 years, and she didn't recognise him immediatley because he had changed so much. That's what it's about.
