The South American nation is poised to become the first country in the world to fully legalize marijuana. I think this will become an interesting case study on the effect of legalization. If things go well in Uruguay, then it will be a good time to reevaluate the War on Drugs. However, the article claims that if a country like Mexico were to take the same step it would be meaningless in terms of stopping cartels. This is because most criminals profit off of exporting to the United States. Although, if Marijuana were legalized across the hemisphere, drug cartel profits would be cut by 30 per cent.
