Learn Special Numbers in Mandarin!

This week I want to do something different. Instead of going over mandarin phrases I will introduce you special numbers. I got this idea after explaining to a friend yesterday about number and alphabet homophones in mandarin. These are commonly used in Taiwanese drama. It will be hard to spot if you don't know the language. However, if you are a meticulous drama watch you will spot it in text messages.
In short, it is a similar concept to acronyms like LOL (Laugh out loud) in English. The only difference here is you're playing with pronunciation.

This is pretty straightforward, but, please let me know if you want further explanation or want to learn more number references.

As usual, please let me know if you want to be tagged or removed from my Learn Chinese through Taiwanese drama tag list. You can always follow the Taiwanese drama community for weekly updates! Thanks!

@MyAffairWith you could think of it like this Xi = She / An = Aun (from Auntie) so Xiang = She-Aun. Or another simpler way of pronouncing "Xiang" is "Sean". So, if you want to say I miss you, you can say "Woah-Sean-Nee". I hope this make sense. I tried to use words that sound identical to the pinyin.
How do you pronounce Xiang under the 5-3-0? Great card!!! Thank you for sharing this!!! โ˜บ๏ธ
@Gladness yeah! Same concept!
That's really neat! So it is sort of like "gr8" for great, but they can say whole sentences.
@cindystran Teehee! mayyyyyyybe :D

How To Learn A New Language At Home
I've been trying to improve my French recently, and came across these awesome YouTubers called DamonandJo. They have self-taught themselves nearly 6 languages! I believe they speak French, Spanish, Portugese, Italian, German, and of course English! You can either watch the video above (which I suggest cause they have the BEST sense of humor) or check out their tips below: 1. Follow Famous YouTubers in the language you want to learn! There are tons of youtubers in other languages, and often if they are famous enough, there will be english subtitles. Listen to them to hear real people speaking the language rather than a text book! They're usually super entertaining too so it helps :) 2. Follow those YouTubers or famous people on twitter so you see that language each day! The easiest way to get used to a foreign language is to see it all the time and this really helps! 3. Change your phone/facebook/etc language to your desired language! Since you probably already know where everything is in your phone or facebook, you wont be confused and you'll learn a ton of new vocab! 4. Listen to audio books in the language you want!!! Audible has a ton of foreign language books. Try starting with a book you already know well (like Harry Potter for me - I'm trying to read that in Korean right now...) and listen throughout your day! 5. Sign up for foreign magazines or newsletters! Or even better download their app in another language! For example, my boyfriend gets push notification from Le Monde which is a french newspaper :) Even if you only read the headline, its practice. 6. Try cooking a meal using a recipe in a different language! You start to learn that a lot of words you actually already know (for example, sautรฉ means the same thing in french and in korean bokkeum (like bokkeumbap) means fried! so literally "fried rice!" 7. Watch TV shows in the language Duh!!!! 8. Talk to yourself and dont be afraid! Practice speaking whenever you can, even to people who are strangers! be brave! What languages are you trying to learn?!
4 Taiwanese Dramas Remade into Korean
I was talking to @cindystran recently about how I've only seen one Taiwanese drama ever, but it looks like I'll have to dive into that world soon! Check out these 4 Taiwanese drama that have Korean counterparts! 1. Fated to Love You Taiwanese version: Starring Joe Chen and Ethan Juan. This Taiwanese drama came out in 2008, and it broke rating records. Korean version: Starring Jang Na Ra, Jang Hyuk and Choi Jin Hyuk. The series reunited Jang Hyuk and Jang Na Ra. Plot: Making a mistake after having way too many drinks can change everything. Lee Gun is the successor to a large company run by his family. Kim Mi Young is an average-looking secretary in a law firm who earned the nickname โ€œPost-Itโ€ for her inability to say no to her colleagues who dump work on her. When the two cross paths one night after having too much to drink, they end up having a one-night stand. When Mi Young finds out afterwards that she is pregnant, what will become of them? 2. My Queen Taiwanese version: starring Ethan Juan and Cheryl Yang. And it was awarded the Best Channel Advertising at the 44th Golden Bell Awards. Korean version: named "Witch's Romance". starring Uhm Jung Hwa and Park Seo Joon. Plot: Two hard working people who have lost love in their lives meet and despite the age difference, they find a lot in common with each other, including their scarred hearts. 3. In Time With You Taiwanese version: Starring Ariel Lin, Chen Bolin and Sunny Wang. "Li Daren" probably will be the most ideal prince in every girl's dream. Korean version: The name of this Korean drama will is The Time We Were Not In Love with Ha Ji Won and Lee Jin Wook . Plot: Oh Ha-Na and Choi Won are both 34-years-old. They have been friends for 17 years. Oh Ha-Na is currently a career woman with an honest and confident personality. Choi Won works as an assistant purser for an airline. He has always helped Oh Ha-Na whenever she got into trouble. Will Oh Ha-Na and Choi Won find love? 4. Absolute Boyfriend Taiwanese version: Starring Jiro Wang and Gu Hye Sun. Consider how cute and pretty this couple is; you don't want to miss it. Its about an adorable girl who is consistently seeking for love but always has a lack of luck...so she has one custom made. Korean version: There have been rumors about Absolute Boyfriend being remade into a Korean drama for a really long time. There is a Japanese version though!!! Plot: Riiko Izawa has never had a boyfriend and she has been rejected by every boy she has ever had a crush on. When she returns a lost cell phone to an oddly dressed salesman, she mentions wanting a boyfriend. To thank her, he directs her to his company's website, Kronos Heaven. When she visits the site, Riiko finds it's a site to create your perfect lover. Thinking it's a game, she customizes and accidentally orders one. The next day, her new lover arrives.

[Before K-Drama] Boys Over Flowers!
It's time for another "Before K-Drama" where we talk about what dramas were originally (webtoon, manga, book, etc) I'm pretty sure you all have heard of this little drama: Boys Over Flowers: It is based on Japanese manga Hana Yori Dango (่Šฑใ‚ˆใ‚Š็”ทๅญ) written by Yoko Kamio. There have been Japanese, Taiwanese, Indian, and, of course, a Korean remake! Most of them have had not only drama versions but also full length films! (It's called Meteor Garden in Taiwanese!) The Korean version, "Boys Over Flowers," is usually people's first K-drama and if you haven't seen it then you've definitely heard of it t least once! (Also, I don't know why Jan-di's legs are cut off in this photo hahaha) I actually watched Hana Yori Dango (the Japanese remake) completely by accident! My parents were trying to get me my first ever Korean DVD for Christmas and sort of failed ;P But it ended up being a good thing! They thought they got me Boys Over Flowers, but they got me the movie version of Hana Yori Dango! And it was sooo good! (Like, cheesy Japanese drama good, so...hahah) I haven't watched the drama yet though :D I haven't seen Meteor Garden (the Taiwanese version) either even though this was the first drama version of the manga! Which of these have you seen or read!? and if you havent seen any... Tagging my "Before K-Drama" folks! @merryjayne13 @Yongsongmi @Kamiamon @CreeTheOtaku @chongx @RaquelArredondo @KellyOConnor @Msrayray95 @drummergirl691 @netchtiBates @Lizzeh @PamelaPenaloza @Priscilla @biancadanica98 @petname83 @JamiMilsap @juniholtgrewe @sosoaloraine23 @sherrysahar @KiraHitomi @TLeahEdwards @shananunezl1234 @IMNII @SarahIvester
