Music and Men's Fashion in 1967-68

In the postwar era, the British were the leaders of style. The Rockers, the Teddy Boys, and the Mods were young adult that stressed independence, fun, fashion, and...music.  The Rockers listened to 1950s rock-and roll, wore black leather jackets, greased with pompadour hairstyle, and rode motorbikes.
The Teddy Boys (also known as Teds) listened to rock n’ roll, rode motorcycles, wore drape suits with pompadours hairstyle, and were stereotyped as beer-drinking brawlers.
The Mods (short for Modernists), listened to modern jazz as they showed their styles off at local cafes. They were characterized by their choice of style different from the 1950s and adopted new fads. Mods used clothing to craft a sense of identity. Their look was classy; they mimicked the clothing and hairstyles of high fashion designers in France and Italy; opting for tailored suits, which were topped by anoraks that became their trademark. They rode on scooters, usually Vespas or Lambrettas. The Mods dress style was often called the City Gent look. The young men incorporated striped boating blazers and bold prints into their wardrobe. Shirts were slim, with a necessary button down collar accompanied by slim fitted pants. Levi's were the only type of jeans worn by Mods. They worked at the lower end of the work force, usually nine to five jobs leaving time for clothes, music, and clubs.
British rock bands such as The Who, The Small Faces, the Beatles, Procol Harum, the Animals, and The Kinks emerged from the Mod subculture. By 1965, some bands were regulars in Carnaby Street. Around 1966, Mod arguably ceased to be a specific subculture. Starting in 1967, the Mod culture became the reemergence of flamboyance that had been absent from menswear for nearly a century. A phenomenon known as the peacock revolution. Carnaby Street emerged as the virtual fashion parades and epicenter of peacock revolution, which describe all manner of bold and  graphic clothing with endless capacity for creativity and eye-catching reinvention.
Fashion designers made the novelty in fabrics, cuts, colours, and patterns. Particularly with the proto-psychedelic, Indian-influenced colours and pattern. Coloured scarf, psychedelic or floral shirt, and double-breasted scarlet jacket with wide lapels and gold floral are snapshots of what 1967’s men would have worn. The boutique I Was Lord Kitchener’s Valet in Portobello Road specialized in a distinctive merger of pop art and nostalgia, particularly Victorian and Edwardian military wear. Its window displays inspired artist Peter Blake in designing the cover of one of the most famous albums in rock history, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. In 1967, rock music also began to change. Some bands turn their music into psychedelic. Peacock revolution marks the early era of psychedelia. Some music videos and photos of 60's rock bands in 1967-1968 show their outfits of peacock revolution.
Procol Harum are an English rock band formed in 1967. They contributed to the development of symphonic rock, and by extension, progressive rock. Their best-known recording is their 1967 hit single "A Whiter Shade of Pale", which is considered a classic of popular music and is one of the few singles to have sold over 10 million copies. Although noted for its baroque and classical influence, Procol Harum's music also embraces the blues, R&B, and soul.
Bee Gees formed in 1958. Consist of brothers Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb. They had two distinct periods of exceptional success; as a popular music act in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and as prominent performers of the disco music era in the late 1970s. Before disco, the brothers Gibb added Colin Petersen (drum) and Vince Melouney (guitar) to the group. 
The Beatles were an English rock band, formed in Liverpool in 1960. Get Back / The Beatles This late addition to the Beatles catalog, Get Back encapsulates the paranoid doubt experienced by people who once belonged to the 60's counter culture movement. Let it get you through the paranoid doubt of the end of the work day. Music When The Lights Go Out: Songs To Help You Sleep
There is nothing worse than laying in your bed trying to fall asleep. Your eyes are darting around under the lids. The lights are dim, and yet, your brain won't shut off. The impulses are still firing and yet your body is exhausted. You want nothing more than to drift off to dreamland. Music is a huge deal as far as psychology goes. It can help with productivity, working out and even sleep. When you're having trouble drifting into subconscious bliss turn on these tunes and put your mind at ease. Before you know it, you'll be dreaming with the best of them. Instead of water sounds try... House of Cards by Radiohead Radiohead is a great band to listen to when you want to chill out entirely. Their music is cinematic and atmospheric, which is great for catching Z's. Radiohead's music fills the room, and will create a sonic coccoon for your slumber. Totally cool right? House of Cards is a slow building song with almost a lullaby effect. Thom Yorke's haunting vocal soothes as the song ebbs and flows like waves. It's totally better than contrived water sounds. Check out the OK Computer album too. It's full of grade A sleepy time tracks. Instead of rain and thunder sounds try... I Am The Rain by Peter Doherty This song always calms me down. It is melancholy at its height. It's a dreamy acoustic track that even has rain sounds in some of the background. It has a lot of elements that remind you of that chilly spring rain that comes when everything is falling down. It honestly is beautiful, and yes I have a bias towards this artist but still..you can't deny the power of a brilliant acoustic ballad as far as sleep goes. If you want more, check out his solo album Grace / Wastelands it's largely acoustic and very mellow. Great songwriting too. I've fallen asleep to this album many times. Instead of white noise try... Stay Covered by Thirty Seconds to Mars This may be a more edgy and deliberate version of Rihanna's smash hit, but it really gets the job done as far as sleep goes. Jared Leto's voice is a lot more gritty and steady than Rihanna's and the subtle backing provides a really smooth soundscape. If you let yourself concentrate on the driving beat and subtle lyrics of this song you'll fall asleep in no time. I highly recommend Thirty Seconds To Mars' album Love Lust Faith and Dreams, there are a lot of atmospheric tracks that build just like the first song on this list. I think it's good to have music that fills the room, it creates a safer space and enables your mind to shut off faster. Instead of animal sounds try... Number One Party Anthem by Arctic Monkeys This song's title couldn't be further from it's musical content. This song is a slow burner, like a candle being blown out at two A.M. It simmers as it goes on. This song is a rarity in the Monkeys' catalog. And it stands out as one of their best. Alex Turner's dreamy vocals fit perfectly with the acoustic vibe and are a sure fire way to help you get some rest. Try out their album A.M. which features a lot of slick tracks with even vocal quality and driving beats. This sort of regulation will help with sleep. What are your favorite sleepytime tracks? 10 Panic! At The Disco Songs That'll Help You Move On
Love is a fickle thing. It comes and goes faster than you can snap your fingers. Certain bands have a way of documenting the bitterness you feel after a break-up, or the freedom of taking a break. Panic! At The Disco is one of those bands. So, if you've been hurt or tricked, heart-broken or forgotten, this one's for you. 1. Nicotine / Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die! Bitter break-ups are a real thing. Trust me, I've been there. Sometimes you get addicted to a person and the way they make you feel. Losing control and hope can lead to freedom...but more or less it just results in a dependence on destruction. Nicotine is an ode to that. When people become addictive, we know it's probably time to move on, just for our own safety. When you enter a relationship that is unstable and exciting, we can fall into bad habits, and just like Nicotine...that person could very well ruin your life. Best Lyric: "Just one more hit and then we're through / cause you could never love me back." 2. Mercenary / Batman Arkham City Soundtrack A lot of fans missed this song because of its limited release. But it's a fantastic song to listen to right after you break up with someone and need reassurance that yes, being alone is hard, but it's better than being jerked around. Best Lyric: I dodge the blast and apologize for collateral damage. Because while we can't save every relationship, we can acknowledge what we learned from the worst ones. 3. Nearly Witches (Ever Since We Met) / Vices Virtues Much like Nicotine, this song centers on the idea of addiction. The person you're with gives you a feeling like no other, and when that crash lands to earth and the honeymoon is over...your feelings have to deal. When something is really really good, and we end up having to let it go for some reason, we almost wish it never happened. By removing the experience of that person, we don't have to feel the pain. Best Lyric: "Ever since we met / I only shoot-up with your perfume / Its the only thing / that makes me feel as good as you do / ever since we met / I've got just one regret to live through/ and that one regret is you." 4. Turn off the Lights / Vices Virtues, Bonus Track After being single for a little while, this song became my anthem. It nails that empty feeling you get after you leave someone for the last time. Things are never easy after you get hurt, or you hurt someone else. But escaping...into a world of your choosing whether it be work, playing music, or finding someone new, could be the anecdote to your love-sick heart. I identify with this song because it's very honest. The lyrics ring out like a lost call over a forgotten battlefield, "Our consciences are always so much heavier than our egos." Sometimes the scariest moments in our lives are when we're forced to be alone with our thoughts. Best Lyric: "I've got my heavy heart to hold me down / once it falls apart / my head's in the clouds." 5. Time To Dance / A Fever You Can't Sweat Out Heavily inspired by Chuck Palahniuk "Invisible Monsters", Time To Dance is an exposing of the fickle nature of beauty and the effect on our relationships with others. When you leave a relationship or are reluctant to move on, there's going to be a lot of anger involved. You're going to feel like you're being pulled in a lot of different directions, and your friends, parents, whoever...are all going to want to weigh in on what you do. "Give me a break" is a lyric that you'll hear in your head over and over again. Sometimes all you need when you're trying to move on is the attention of someone else. Best Lyric: "Give me envy, give me malice, give me your attention, give me envy, give me malice, give me a break." 6. Bittersweet / Vices Virtues Bonus Track When you're trapped in a relationship that you know is doomed, you can often feel like you're setting yourself up for failure. A trap. Bittersweet is the perfect song to soundtrack your hopeless devotion to someone you know won't last for long. There are so many things wrong with this person and this relationship, but you can't pull yourself away. Ever experience that? There is a downside to literally everything, but sometimes you just need that. You have to have that disastrous relationship in order to figure out when things are really really good. Best Lyric: "All that hate is gonna burn you up / it keeps me warm at night." 7. Northern Downpour / Pretty Odd Every break-up or change has that "I'm sad and I need to cry about this for a few minutes" song. Northern Downpour is that song. It's about missing someone. It's about longing for the past. We all go through those moments. Even though we want to be the people who say "fuck 'em!" and move on, we can't always do that. It's not possible or healthy. Sometimes we just have to cry it out and be fond for the times when we were happy. People come and go, and that 's not an easy thing to cope with...but our worlds never stop turning. Best Lyric: "I missed your skin when you were East / You clicked your heels and wished for me." 8. This is Gospel / Too Weird to Live Too Rare to Die Things end for a reason. Whether they were doomed from the start, or just became that way because of new people, new situations, or new personality traits emerging doesn't matter. What matters is that things are falling apart, and rather than committing to polishing the brass on the Titanic, you have to let it go. There is an old adage, "If you love something let it go." And even though the fear of being alone can cripple you, you have to take the dive, and let things go, because somewhere down the line, you'll thank yourself. Best Lyric: If you love me let me go. 9. Hallelujah! / Death of a Bachelor This is the "I'm owning up to my past romantic mistakes and moving on" song. For all the bachelors and bachelorettes who seem to jump from person to person without so much as a passing glance, this one is for you. Reforming your ways and wanting to settle down isn't a crime. "In a state of emergency, who was I trying to be?" If you're trying to fill the void with people, you know there has to be another way to make yourself happy. Each casual affair ends worse than the last, and if you can't figure out why you keep failing...just listen to the music. Best Lyric: "Nobody wants you when you have no heart." 10. New Perspective / Jennifer's Body Soundtrack Okay, so we know what we did wrong. We know all the people we've hurt. We know we need to change...so how? "Stop there and let me correct it / I wanna live a life from a New Perspective." Sometimes when things keep failing, we need to change how we see things. Moving on is all about getting a new perspective on life. We have to look for different qualities in people. We have to grow up a little bit. So if your previous relationships are utter failures, that doesn't have to dictate your romantic future. You have control over this. Give yourself a break and learn from your mistakes. Heartbreak aside...you'll get through it. It's okay, you can move on. Best Lyric: "We move along in some new passion knowing everything is fine.
I Can't Believe It's Not ____!: Songs you didn't know were covers
Full disclosure: Neither butter nor its evil counterpart, I Can't Believe It's Not Butter!, have really anything to do with the rest of this card at all. But the name is just so damn catchy and malleable, so, forgive me. Moving on, I'm here to give some love to the original composers and performers of songs that you may not know deserve credit. Sometimes, a song gets buried for years, only to be picked up by a totally different artist (often in a different genre and style), and it's the second version that blows up. In lots of these cases, there is little mention of the original. Let's change that. I Can't Believe It's Not LED ZEPPELIN! Song: "Dazed and Confused" (1969) Original: Jake Holmes (1967) Eerily enough, Jake Holmes actually has some real Robert Plant qualities to his voice. Or maybe Plant ripped his vocal style off of Holmes just like he did one of his best songs. I don't know. Is nothing sacred? I Can't Believe It's Not AMY WINEHOUSE! Song: "Valerie" (2007) Original: The Zutons (2006) The Zutons are kind of a guilty pleasure of mine. They're a not-very-good mid-2000s Brit rock group, but something about the lead singer's voice is really appealing to me. Amy's version is damn-near perfect and is the basis of every A Capella group's top hit, but it wouldn't have been possible without The Zutons. Which is not something that you can say for many things in this world. I Can't Believe It's Not ARETHA FRANKLIN! Song: "Respect" (1967) Original: Otis Redding (1965) Ok, this one is legitimately surprising. I've heard the Otis version a million times and I didn't know that it was his song until recently. The two versions are really, really different, and each is awesome in its own right. It's hard to go wrong with Otis or Aretha. Everyone wins. I Can't Believe It's Not THE BEATLES! Song: "Twist and Shout" (1963) Original: The Isley Brothers (1962) The Isley Brothers didn't actually write this song - Phil Medley and Bert Burns did - but they were the first to chart the song, before The Beatles did a year later. Fun fact: The Beatles recorded Please Please Me, the record that contains this hit, in just 10 hours. Their producer knew that "Twist and Shout" would totally ruin John Lennon's voice because of its demanding style, so he saved it for last, with just 15 minutes of scheduled recording time left. Indeed, it totally blew out Lennon's voice, and, while the producer wanted to do a second take, Lennon just couldn't manage it. Ended up fine, if you ask me. I Can't Believe It's Not ELVIS PRESLEY! Song: "Hound Dog" (1956) Original: Big Mama Thornton (1952) Oh man! OH MAN! Who is Big Mama Thornton, and where has she been? This woman is a force! She also recorded "Ball n' Chain" before Janis Joplin made it a hit. Give the lady some love! This version is fucking awesome! But, yeah, Elvis's is better. Sorry Big Mama. Adele's Producer Struggled With Keeping 'Hello' A Secret
"Hello from the other side." Greg Kurstin is not going to lie, it was incredibly hard to keep his lips sealed while preparing Adele's current number 1 hit, "Hello". This week, Adele's producer sat down with the Associated Press for an interview where he revealed that he struggled keeping her hit single a secret for over a year. Not only did he produce the song, but he also cowrote it. "I'm not going to lie — it's not easy to hold that information in for that long," the Grammy and Golden Globe nominated songwriter-producer said. Since last Friday, "Hello" has topped number one on the iTunes charts in over 85 countries. It also beat the Vevo record for most views in one day with 27.7 million which is more than Taylor Swift's huge hit, Bad Blood. This is Adele's first single to be released in just under four years which helped boost some of the hype around the song. "You kind of want to shout it out, run around in the streets yelling to random strangers what you've just done," he joked. Kurstin has worked with Pink, Lily Allen, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, and now Adele. He is the writer of famous pop hits, "Chandelier" by Sia, "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)" by Kelly Clarkson, and "Burn" by Ellie Goulding. He was supposed to work with Adele on her past hit album '21' however it never fell into place. He did contribute to Adele's two songs within the upcoming album, "Water Under the Bridge" and "Million Years Ago". "I'm still in shock, honestly. I was just pretty blown away," Kurstin said about the success of the track. She's just so wonderful to be around. She is funny and she's just so down-to-earth...You can immediately relate to her and connect with her. I really felt very comfortable around her because she makes you feel that way. She's just cool, and then she gets on the microphone and of course blows your mind." Adele's album is set to debut November 20.
