Too Much Chapter 23: Puzzle Pieces
Hello, chapter 23 is here. Hope you enjoyed the bit of silliness of the last chapter. This one is a mix.
Disclaimer: Many of the characters aside from BTS are made up. And, of course, I don't know BTS personally so their personalities are probably mostly fictional.
Character thoughts are in { } and words in English are bolded. Let me know if you would like to be tagged in future chapters. Please forgive me for any mistakes I make and I hope you enjoy!

Narrator POV
After that morning, the boys had taken Nina’s advice and messaged Rose. Exactly as Nina predicted, Rose didn’t remember almost anything from that morning. Nina assured her that Rose hadn’t said anything embarrassing, but Rose thought she remembered crying and the boys hugging her. She definitely remembered hugging Yoongi, she couldn’t seem to get his scent out of her head. And Jimin smiling at her… she figured that, for whatever reason, they must’ve forgiven her for her outburst and talked to her that morning. Rose felt both relieved and anxious.
For the next week, the boys’ schedule kept them busy and they were unable to hang out. Rose kept busy with work, restarting her regular exercises (albeit more lightly), and continuing work on her book. After having slept for so long after just having some sleep the day before, Rose felt a lot more rested than usual. Yoongi was unable to come over the next Saturday morning due to an early schedule, but the boys invited both Rose and Nina to eat with them that night.
Everyone had fun chowing down on pizza, after Namjoon had somehow managed to break the stove. Rose enjoyed the night because everything seemed back to normal. She was a little wary about how normal it was, but she decided to stop trying to look for the worst in everything. That was her new goal. The boys did, of course, ask her a few times if her knee was alright, but after playfully telling them to stop asking before she showed them exactly how well her knee was doing (a powerful roundhouse kick in the air) they stopped asking.
They played a few cards games and a couple videogame matches, but after that, it was time to head home. Farewells were said and the girls went back home. The boys continued to have a busy schedule as they worked on some of their new choreography, interviews, appearance, and the like. She had met the younger ones for tutoring while the older ones were at schedules, but it wasn’t for another couple weeks before Rose was asked to come over and help on the last couple songs Yoongi and Namjoon had just finished.
Yoongi POV
The sound of the doorbell had the maknaes sprinting out of their room with yells of “Noona!”. I was excited. I hadn’t seen her for almost two weeks. I, of course, had been texting her, but it wasn’t the same thing. Jungkook managed to manhandle his way to the door handle whereupon he flung it open when the other two fell into him. Taehyung was the first person to make it out of the accidental dogpile and he scooped up a laughing Rose like he was going to run away with her. God, how I loved to see her laughing. Her voice was musical. Maybe it was just me, but it seemed like she was more beautiful every time I saw her. When the other two were finally able to untangle themselves, they started to playfully fight over Rose.
Jin walked to the doorway, “Okay boys, let the poor noona go. You’re gonna scar her for life if you keep doing that every time she comes over.” Rose laughed at the boys who were fighting over who got to be the last to let go.
“Okay,” Rose said. “On the count of three. One, two, three.” The boys let go at the same time. Rose was finally able to get in the house. She hugged Jin as she came in. “Thanks for looking out for me, eomma.” Jin laughed. I knew Rose didn’t like like Jin and Jin liked Nina, but I couldn’t help but get a little jealous. I got a little nervous when she came to me to hug me. I saw a chain around her neck, but the pendant was hidden in her shirt. {I wonder if it’s the necklace I gave her?} That thought made my heart flutter more as she hugged me. She still smelled the same as always. “Good to be back here,” she said. She started looking around.
“Namjoon’s getting some snacks at the store and Hoseok’s finishing up his shower.” I answered her unasked question. She nodded her head in understanding and smiled at me.
“Taehyung!” We heard Hoseok yelling from my and his bedroom. The door opened. “What’d you do with—“ he froze as he saw Rose standing there. Rose gasped and her face turned bright red.
“Hoseok!” Jin yelled as he shoved an almost naked Hoseok back into the room. Rose was finally able to break her gaze away as she stared blankly at the wall at the end of the hall, biting her lip. Her face was still beet-red. {I can’t believe Hoseok came out only in a towel. And I can’t believe both of them just kept staring. There’s no way she could like him, right?} Jungkook came over and shook the unmoving Rose.
“Noona. Noona! I think he broke her,” Jungkook said the last part to Taehyung.
“Nope,” smirked Jimin. “I think she just liked what she saw. Should I do it too?” Jimin started to pull his shirt up.
“Don’t you dare!” yelled Jin as he yanked Jimin’s shirt down with Jimin laughing.
I walked in front of Rose while the other boys wrestled with Jimin to keep him from pulling his shirt up again. “Are you okay?” I was more than a bit jealous about her reaction towards Hoseok. Rose blinked her eyes and looked at me.
“Uh, yeah. Sorry, that just took me a moment to recover. I really...really was not expecting that.” She gave me an embarrassed smile. Jimin sauntered over to stand next to me.
“So, you’re a bit of a pervert, huh?” Jimin smiled slyly at Rose. The boys started yelling at him.
“No!” Rose yelled. “But...I am a very straight woman and that was a man fresh outta the shower wrapped only in a towel. I think I’d be worried if I didn’t have that reaction. Now, if we were, say, going swimming, I would be expecting to see half-naked guys and that wouldn’t bother me. But, like I said, it was unexpected and I was not prepared. That’s why.” Jimin continued to give her a perverted look and she just shrugged. My door opened again and a fully clothed, and still flushed, Hoseok stumbled out.
“I am so sorry.” Hoseok spit out. He started rambling, “I thought you weren’t gonna be here for another hour and then Taehyung took off with my clothes again and then when I came out, my mind went completely blank. I’m so, so sorry.”
Rose laughed and ruffled his still damp hair. “It’s ok. I didn’t think you did that on purpose.” Hoseok smiled and loosened up slightly. “But, I will have to say... I didn’t mind the view.” She laughed loudly as she plopped down on the couch. Hoseok’s face went back to being red, red, red. Jimin sat down next to her and high-fived her. {I can’t believe she actually said that}.
“See? It’s ok to appreciate,” Jimin said, smirking triumphantly. There was a banging on the front door. Taehyung looked through the monitor.
“It’s hyung,” he said as he opened the door. Namjoon walked in with bags of groceries on his arms.
“I thought you said you were just getting snacks?” Jin asked incredulously.
“I was. I did. These were on sale and I didn’t want the gluttons to eat all the snacks again,” Namjoon thrust his arms towards the maknae line who just smiled back.
“We’re growing boys.”
“Whatever. Anyway, what’d I miss? I can feel the awkward tension in the air.”
*************************************************************************************
2 hours later
Jin called out that dinner was ready and the younger boys burst out of their bedroom. I looked up from the notebook and watched as Rose continued to focus on the paper. I didn’t even think she heard Jin. I loved how she ran her tongue across her teeth when she was thinking. And how she tapped on her nose with finger or pen when she was trying to remember something. She looked so beautiful with her hair pulled over one shoulder. Hot, actually. I let my eyes run across her exposed neck, from her unadorned earlobes down her long, slender neck to the chain of the necklace I still couldn’t identify. She grabbed the pendant as she bit on the chain and moved the pendant back and forth making a zipping sound. She grabbed it tightly and then let it drop back into her shirt.
I smiled. It was my necklace. She was wearing the necklace I had given her. I traced my eyes back up from the chain to her jawline and followed it to her lips. Her bottom lip was perfectly plump while the top lip was slightly smaller. They were perfect. I let my gaze continue along her profile. Until I saw Namjoon looking at me. He didn’t look happy. I quickly looked back at the lyrics. {How long has he been watching? Watching me watching her}. I tried my best to hide my embarrassment. I coughed to get Rose’s attention. “Dinner’s ready.”
“Ah. Ok, just a sec.” She turned to look at Namjoon and gave a suggestion about the lyrics. As soon as Namjoon jotted it down, Rose looked back to me and smiled. “Shall we?” The three of us went to the table and joined the feeding frenzy. I had no idea why, but Jin was giving me a weird look. Hoseok was completely refusing to let his eyes meet mine. {What the hell? Why are they looking me like that?} I thought for a moment. {No way}. I realized that they were sitting on the ends closest to the couch. They must have seen me looking at Rose. {Oh shit, shit, shit}. I was already certain that Hoseok knew about either me or Namjoon liking Rose. Now I knew that he knew about me. And Jin too. It just gets bigger and bigger.
I kept my eyes focused on my food for the rest of dinner. Rose was laughing with the younger boys. {This dinner can’t end soon enough}. Fortunately, it did end quickly. The younger boys helped clean up as Namjoon, Rose, and I went back to the couch.
We were just starting to work on the last song when Taehyung leaned over the couch. “Can noona hear one of our songs?” He asked. I looked at Namjoon.
“I’m not sure if that’s allowed,” Namjoon replied.
“Can you ask? I wanna hear about what she thinks about my part.”
“It’s ok, Namjoon, I don’t have to hear it. Don’t even worry about it.” Rose said. She was probably worried about what our manager would think about a request like that.
Taehyung kept at it. “But she should hear the one with the piano. You used to play, right?” It was quiet.
“You used to play?” I asked.
“And sing, too, right?” Taehyung continued.
“What makes you think that?” {Why was she avoiding answering the question?}
“I’ve seen you listening to music. You’re fingers move like you’re playing the song. Especially when it’s classical music.” Rose was shifting in her seat. {If she really did play, why was she so nervous about saying so? Was it because we’re idols?} “And I’ve heard you humming. Very much in tune. It was actually really pretty.”
“Noona, can you sing for us?” Jungkook piped in, leaning on top of Taehyung.
“Yeah, noona, can you please?” Jimin gave pouty lips. Rose looked extremely uncomfortable.
Jin must’ve noticed because he said, “C’mon, guys, back off. If she doesn’t want to, don’t pressure her.” I knew that Rose was still hiding stuff from us and I was torn between asking her what it was and leaving her alone. I looked at Rose. The look she gave me, it was almost like she was reading my mind.
Rose let out a deep sigh. “It’s...uh...it’s not...” Namjoon put his hand on her shoulder, making me, of course, extremely jealous. But it seemed to reassure her. “I...uh...I know that I’ve kept things from you guys. Mmm... I have reasons for that...” {Angie}. “But I don’t want you to think I don’t trust you. ‘Cause I do. I really like you guys. You’re some of the sweetest guys I’ve ever met. So...I want to share...mmm...but I think anything more than small pieces at a time...I think that would be hard for me.” The other guys sat down on the ground on the other side of the coffee table.
“You don’t have to tell us anything more than what you’re comfortable with,” Hoseok assured her.
Rose let out a small smile. “Thanks. You guys...you did not pick the easiest person to befriend.”
“Don’t we know that—ouch!” Jin elbowed Jimin. {Little brat}. Rose laughed lightly.
“It’s ok. It’s not like I don’t know. Even I know how I am, but I can’t seem to really help it. So, I guess finishing puzzle piece number 1, about my knee, and piece number 2, about my other injuries...Well, they’re related. I was in a really big...mmm...something bad happened. And I was hurt pretty badly. I, uh, used to be a track and field runner. And after the...incident...my left knee was completely shot, the right one not too much better off. And I also used to be a pianist and singer. Not big time, of course, but I was getting there...” Rose trailed off and the little smile on her face made it look like she was starting to get lost in the past. My heart felt like it was being torn so slowly. It hurt so much to think of what she had lost, what she had been through.
“The incident messed me up pretty badly. My knees, my back, my face, my fingers...” she stared morosely at her fingers. They looked perfectly normal to me. She looked up and saw me looking at her fingers. “Here.” She held out her hands. “Feel the bones. Especially around the joints.” I cautiously took her right hand. Even in this situation, I couldn’t help my heart from fluttering just by holding her hand. But enough about that. I grasped her fingers {they really did look like piano fingers} in both of mine and slowly and gently made small squeezes down her pointer finger. At first I didn’t feel anything... but then I did. I rubbed over the spot again. I continued down that finger more quickly and moved to the next one. By the time I got to her middle finger, I felt queasy.
“Hyung, are you okay?” I looked up at Jimin who had a concerned expression. “You’re pale.” I looked back down at her fingers and finished feeling her right hand. I wanted to stop, but I couldn’t. It’s almost as if I felt like I had to know everything that had happened. Everything that had happened. Every single break on her beautiful fingers. I moved to her left hand and Namjoon started to feel her right. He stopped after two fingers, but I had to keep going. Rose let the other guys feel as I continued slowly. {What on God’s Earth had happened to her that she has multiple break marks on every single one of her damn fingers?!}
I couldn’t help but start to feel angry. {Why had she gone through something like this? Whatever it was, why did it happen to her?! And even if it just had to happen to her, why so much?! Wouldn’t taking away her running be enough?! Why did she have to lose so much?! Did her hands get broken too—} she jerked her hand away when I started to move my fingers to her hand. “It was just the fingers,” she stated flatly. She held the hand out for the other guys.
“Those are from breaks, aren’t they?” Taehyung asked sadly. Taehyung was rarely ever this serious. I looked at the other guys. They all looked the same. Even our sunshine. He looked almost as bad as I thought I must look. But I thought about what she said ‘it was just the hands’. What could’ve happened that made her break all of her fingers, multiple times, but didn’t affect her hand? It wasn’t an accident. That much had been made clear. The fact that both she and Nina had made a point to say ‘incident’ and not ‘accident’ kept running through my head. {Did... did someone do this to her?} My train of thought was broken as Rose spoke up.
“Yeah, those’re breaks. Like I said, it was pretty bad. So, it shouldn’t be surprising for me to say that I was unable to play after that. I have quite good functionality now, but I’ll never get it all back. And even as healed as I am, my joints are too messed up for me to be able to play properly. Ever.”
“And your voice...it’s from the same thing?” Namjoon asked.
“Yeah. Same thing. My vocal cords were damaged pretty badly. Humming is alright as long as I don’t go too high or too loudly. But singing, I’m extremely limited and I can’t do it for very long. I tried to once. Singing a song I’d done before...I was barely able to go for a minute. I lost my voice for a week after that. And they told me if I kept doing it, that I could lose it completely. So... that’s that.” It was silent. I was worried that if I didn’t say anything, she might start to think the way she did at the hospital. That we were pitying her. Or that we were scared. I had to break the silence.
“Y’know...” Everyone looked at me and I got freaked for a moment. “We don’t know what it was that happened—and you don’t have to tell us,” I quickly reassured her, “but whatever it was, it doesn’t change who you are or how we feel about you. We still care about you. And I know we don’t really know what to say because, well, we’ve never known anyone who’s gone through something like that before, but we still think of you the same. Our tough noona who can put any of us in our places in an instant.” It made me happy to see her smile at that.
Rose looked like she was close to tears when she said, “You said you don’t know what to say, and yet, that’s perfect. It’s all I needed to hear.” My heart leapt in my chest when I saw her beautiful, pure smile. She was relieved. I had made her feel relieved. I had made her smile like that. And I couldn’t’ve been happier. The younger boys pounced on her. “We’re just glad you’re here.” “You can’t ever leave us now.” “Don’t even think about it.”
Jungkook spoke up, “Whenever you want to tell us something, don’t be afraid. I mean, we won’t ask you any more than you’re comfortable, but just know that we won’t judge you. And you can trust us. With anything.” The other boys nodded in agreement.
Rose smiled and made sure to make eye contact with each of us. “Thank you guys. You don’t know what that means to me. It’ll take some time, but if you can be patient with me, then maybe I’ll be able to show small pieces of myself...so...just bear with me, ok?”
“Of course. Anything for our noona.” Jungkook said.
“Suck up,” Jimin responded and we all laughed.
“Jin,” Rose turned her attention towards him.
“Hm?”
“You, uh, you look like you want to ask a question.”
“Uh, no. I—you’ve already told a lot about yourself today, I won’t ask anything else.” Jin looked away from her.
“It’s ok. I think I have an idea what you’re going to ask anyway. And I’m pretty sure the other guys want to know the answer too... About my not sleeping, right?” Jin looked down. “It’s fine since we’re already on the topic. Yes, what happened, it’s the reason I don’t sleep well. I...I had some head injuries and it caused problems with my ability to sleep. And when I can sleep...I dream about what happened. So yes, I do have trouble sleeping and yes, I do avoid sleeping. But, uh, that’s as much as I want to say about it, ok?” We all nodded. Rose looked between me and Namjoon. “So, should we get back to work?”
We continued working for a while. Namjoon had actually texted the manager who gave us permission to let her hear one song. He actually said that we could let her listen to all of it, but she said she wanted to be surprised when we released it. It made me happy to know that she really must’ve been a true fan to say that. We played the song. It was a slow song with a lot of piano. I loved the way her eyes fluttered close when it started. The small smile on her face. The way her head and fingers swayed to the music.
Everything about her was making me fall more in love with her. {Wait. Love? No way. I’m not in love with her. I’ll admit that I like her, but there’s no way I could be in love with her. Not this soon. Not without even a date or a hint that I might have a chance. Not when she likes Namjoon. It’s not possible for me to be in love with her}.
I looked around at the other guys. Except Namjoon and Hoseok, they seemed to look at her with excitement. They were just excited to hear what she thought. Namjoon...he seemed to look at her with...admiration? Endearment? Maybe he was still at just liking her, not being in love with her. I wasn’t quite sure of what it all was. Hoseok, though... Hoseok was looking at her the way I was pretty sure I had been. {He feels the same as me. He cares for her as much as I do. Does he...love her? I—I don’t even know what to do about this}. Hoseok looked away from her and locked eyes with me. His smile instantly disappeared. He looked ashamed. And I hated myself for making him feel like that. {Why should he feel ashamed for caring about someone? The same with me}. A lot of times, I felt ashamed that I liked the same girl Namjoon liked. And that I was trying to take her for myself. After this, I knew I should talk to Hoseok.
The song ended and Rose congratulated us on making ‘such beautiful music’. All of us were happy that she liked it. And with her being musically-inclined and a fan, I was certain that the other fans would enjoy it just as much. It always brought me happiness to know that people were enjoying the music I worked on.
We finished working on the last song. Rose decided to head home for the night. After saying our goodbyes, Rose left. And I decided it was time to talk to Hoseok.
*********
So, a couple more pieces of Rose's puzzle. I hope I was able to write it well. And now Jin knows about Yoongi. Wonder what that could mean for him. And Yoongi and Hoseok are finally going to talk. I hope it ends well... (I love teasing you guys).
