The Alkiline Diet
The idea behind the low-acid regimen often referred to as an "alkaline diet" is that eating more fruits and vegetables can balance the body’s pH, mitigating issues including heartburn and acid reflux (among others). Alkaline diet discourage eating acid-promoting foods, which include meat, fish, poultry, dairy products, processed foods, white sugar, white flour, and caffeine. Benefits: Researchers have speculated that an alkaline diet might slow bone loss and muscle waste, increase growth hormone, make certain chronic diseases less likely, and ease low back pain. There is also no concrete evidence that an alkaline or vegetarian diet can prevent cancer. Some studies have shown that vegetarians have lower rates of cancer, particularly colon cancer, according to the American Cancer Society. But vegetarians often have other healthy habits, such as exercise and abstaining from drinking and smoking, so it is difficult to determine the effects of diet alone. Harms: First, never eat just alkaline foods. The body has some need for acidic foods, and if you were to go extreme, and consume only foods that become alkaline in your body, you might deprive your body of some essentials. Second, the alkalizing diets do not address essential nutrients. If you are following an alkaline system strictly, you might be failing to pay attention to things like Omega 3 (DHA), and other essential fatty acids. You absolutely need good nutrition, and should make sure you have a balanced diet that includes foods from all the major food groups (cutting down on meats and dairies, of course).
